is here!

As we head into summer, it’s the perfect time to remember how important sun safety really is. Skin cancer affects over 5 million people in the U.S. every year—but the good news is, it’s largely preventable with a few simple habits.

Protect your skin by following the method:
👕 Slip on a shirt
🧴 Slop on SPF 30+ sunscreen
👒 Slap on a wide-brimmed hat
🕶️ Wrap on sunglasses

✔️ Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every 2 hours
✔️ Seek shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
✔️ Wear protective gear like hats and UV-blocking sunglasses
✔️ Avoid tanning beds—there’s no such thing as a safe tan

Sun protection isn’t just for the beach or holidays—it’s an everyday habit that can make a big difference. Stay safe, stay shaded, and enjoy the sunshine responsibly!

We may be a week late, but it’s still worth sharing—May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and last Monday (May 4) marked Melanoma Monday, an important reminder about the most serious form of skin cancer.

Melanoma can be deadly if not caught early—but when detected early, it’s highly treatable. That’s why knowing what to look for matters.

Remember the ABCDEs of melanoma:
A – Asymmetry: One half doesn’t match the other
B – Border: Edges are irregular or blurred
C – Color: Multiple or uneven colors
D – Diameter: Larger than 6mm (pencil eraser), but can be smaller
E – Evolving: Any change in size, shape, or color

What you can do:
✔️ Perform monthly skin checks (don’t forget scalp, nails, and between toes!)
✔️ Wear sunscreen (SPF 30+), protective clothing, and seek shade
✔️ Avoid tanning beds
✔️ Schedule your yearly skin exam with a dermatologist

Skin cancer doesn’t discriminate—it can affect all ages and skin tones. Taking a few minutes to check your skin could save your life.

It’s never too late to start protecting your skin.

🌞 May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month 🌞

As a Mohs surgery practice, we see firsthand how important early prevention and detection can be. Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is one of the most effective ways to reduce your risk of skin cancer.

Here are some simple, essential sun safety tips to keep your skin healthy all year long:

🧴 Apply Sunscreen Daily
Use a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with SPF 30+ every day—even on cloudy days. Apply 30 minutes before going outside.

🔁 Reapply Regularly
Reapply every 2 hours, and after swimming, sweating, or toweling off.

👕 Cover Up
Wear protective clothing like long sleeves, pants, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses.

🌳 Seek Shade
Limit sun exposure between 10 AM and 4 PM, when UV rays are strongest.

🚫 Avoid Tanning Beds
Indoor tanning significantly increases your risk of melanoma—skip the tanning beds entirely.

🔍 Check Your Skin
Perform monthly self-exams and schedule a yearly skin check with your dermatologist.

👂 Don’t Forget These Areas
Ears, scalp, lips, neck, and the backs of your hands are often missed—protect them too!

💡 Sun Safety Reminders
• Use water-resistant sunscreen when outdoors
• Be extra cautious near water, sand, and snow (they reflect UV rays!)
• Some medications can increase sun sensitivity—check with your provider
• Keep newborns out of direct sunlight; use sunscreen for babies over 6 months

Taking a few extra steps today can make a lifelong difference. Stay sun safe! ☀️
