Connection can be experienced.

Not only explained.
Not only discussed.
Not only understood in your mind.

Sometimes connection becomes visible in the way you move beside another living being:

How you listen.
How you respond.
How you notice a shift and make room for it.

A horse-supported experience offers space to explore these moments in real time, with curiosity and care.

Why You Keep Explaining Yourself

Sometimes the body learned that being understood meant being safe.

So you explain the context.
The intention.
The reason you said yes or no.

Notice what happens when you let your presence speak before you reach for more words. You may discover that connection does not require a perfect defense.

When was the last time you were fully present, not already thinking about what comes next?

Before the questions.
Before the next decision.
Multitasking.
Before trying to understand everything.

Simple presence can be:

Noticing the pasture.

Feeling your feet on the ground.

Hearing what’s around you.

Watching the horses move at their own pace.

Noticing your breath without trying to change it.

And allowing your attention to return to what is happening right now.

This is truly arriving.

And for someone who spends much of life thinking ahead, caring for others, solving problems, or moving from one responsibility to the next, that simple practice can feel very different.

Because presence gives you an opportunity to notice yourself before automatically moving on to the next thing.

What am I feeling?

What is my body communicating?

What do I need right now?

Presence is something you can practice and notice beyond the barn.
Take Into your relationships.
Your decisions.
Your work.
And the ordinary moments of your day.

What happens inside you when connection changes?

A horse walks away.

It may mean absolutely nothing about you.

But notice what happens inside you.

Do you immediately want to follow?

Wonder what you did wrong?

Feel the urge to get their attention back?

Feel rejected?

Or maybe… relieved?

This is where the somatic practice begins.

Not by interpreting the horse.

By noticing your response to the moment.

The tightening in your chest.
The change in your breath.
The impulse to move closer.
The story your mind creates.

You don’t have to judge it or change it.

Just notice.

Because sometimes our bodies reveal patterns in relationship before our minds have words for them. Your body has been listening all along.

The tightness in your shoulders.
The held breath.
The sudden ease when something feels true.

These signals are not problems to fix. They are invitations to become more aware of your lived experience.

Because your story isn’t only held in the things you remember or the words you use to describe your life.

It can also show up in the ways you’ve learned to move through the world.

How quickly you say yes.

How difficult it feels to rest.

How your body responds when someone gets too close or leaves.

Nothing in you needs to be forced into bloom.

Growth does not have to be loud to be real.

Gentle awareness is still movement. A quiet shift in how you meet yourself can be the beginning of something meaningful.

Try this with me.

For just a moment,
stop trying to change how you feel.

Notice your breath
without deepening it.

Notice your shoulders
without dropping them.

Notice your belly
without trying to soften it.

Notice where your body
meets the ground.

And then ask:

What happens when I stop
asking my body to be different?

Stay there for a moment.

Notice.

Sometimes it’s the quiet shift
from trying to change yourself…

to becoming curious about yourself.

You do not have to rush.

Sometimes simply noticing what is here: the tension, the breath, the urge to move, or the quiet beneath it all is all we need.

Many of us have become so accustomed to pushing through that we don’t realize how much our bodies are communicating throughout the day.

Tight shoulders.
A shallow breath.
Restlessness.
Holding.
Numbness.
The feeling that you should be doing something even when there is nothing that needs to be done.

What happens when, instead of immediately trying to change it, you simply notice?

This is part of what I love about somatic work alongside horses.

Horses don’t ask us to hurry.

There is room to slow down.
To feel your feet on the ground.
To notice your breath.
To become curious about what changes when a horse comes closer—or moves away.

Sometimes, in that space, we begin to hear the quieter stories our bodies have been carrying.

Not because we forced something to happen.

But because we finally gave ourselves enough space to notice.

How your body responds when someone gets too close.

The urge to make yourself smaller.

The tension that appears when you want to say no.

Or the exhale that comes when you finally feel like you don’t have to take care of everyone else.

These are some of the threads of your somatic story.

And especially for women over 40, there can be something powerful about becoming curious about that story.

What have I learned?
What have I been carrying?
What feels different now?
And what does my body need in this season of my life?

This is part of what we practice in our somatic coaching work alongside horses.

We slow down enough to notice.

Without the story.
Without forcing an answer.
Without trying to immediately change what we find.

Because sometimes awareness itself is where something new begins.

🐴🌿

Your body has been listening all along.
Maybe now is the time to listen back.

Sometimes your mind says , “I’m fine.”

But the body may be telling a different story.

A tightness across your chest.
A jaw that won’t quite soften.
Numbness where you expected to feel something.
A tingling in your hands.
Restless legs.
A breath that never seems to make it all the way down.

These sensations don’t always need to be fixed, explained, or pushed away.

Sometimes they simply need to be noticed.

This is something the horses invite us into so naturally.

They aren’t asking us to explain how we feel.
They aren’t asking us to have the right words.
They meet what is actually present.

And when we slow down beside them, we can begin to do the same.

What am I noticing in my body right now?
Where do I feel it?
What happens if I stay curious instead of judging it?

Not “What’s wrong with me?”

Just…

What is my body telling me beneath “I’m fine”?

Today, I invite you to notice.

Without judgment.
Without needing to change anything.
Without needing to understand it all.

Just notice. 🌿🐴

Ever notice how your entire body takes a deep exhale the moment you stand beside a grazing horse? ✨
It isn’t just your imagination, it’s biology.
Here is what is happening beneath the surface when we share space with horses:
* Nervous System Co-Regulation: As highly perceptive prey animals, horses live entirely in the "here and now," constantly tracking subtle emotional and physiological cues. When we are around a calm, grounded horse, our nervous systems naturally attune to theirs, shifting us out of survival mode and into a shared state of safety.
* Heart Rhythm Coherence: Research shows that being in close proximity to a horse can synchronize our heart rhythms. Their steady presence engages our vagal system, supporting healthier Heart Rate Variability (HRV), slowing our pulse, and bringing our cardiovascular system into balance.
* Neurochemical Shifts: Experiencing safe, attuned connection with horses helps lower the stress hormone cortisol while boosting oxytocin—the hormone responsible for bonding, trust, and openness.
* Living Biofeedback: Horses don’t respond to words, curated masks, or social performance. They respond to authentic, present energy. In a world that constantly demands our mental overdrive, horses invite our bodies to soften, ground, and simply be.
Next time you need to reset, step out of your thoughts, breathe alongside a horse, and let your body remember what true presence feels like. 🌿

There’s a difference between knowing and actually feeling that truth in your body.

You can tell yourself to relax, move on, or stop procrastinating and overthinking.

And still notice that your jaw is tight.
Your shoulders are braced.
Your breath is shallow.
Your body is still preparing for what might happen next.

This is part of what we explore in Somatic Equine-Facilitated Learning.

With horses as partners, we slow things down enough to notice what your body has been holding—without judgment and without needing to have all the right words.

Horses respond to what is happening in the present moment: changes in movement, tension, attention, proximity, and energy. Their feedback can help us become curious about patterns we may not even realize we’re carrying.

Not to force ourselves to be calm.

But to develop more awareness, more choice, and a greater capacity to be present with ourselves.

🍂 Fall 60-minute Somatic EFL sessions are now booking at ClearWind Farm.

If you’ve been feeling like you’re always holding everything together, running on empty, or simply longing to reconnect with yourself, this may be a beautiful place to begin.
