It’s not because we don’t love them. (Trust us, we cherish every photo you send us privately!) It’s because we believe your birth is a sanctuary, not a marketing opportunity.

At Great Expectations, we never want a client to feel like they are "performing" or that their most vulnerable moments are being curated for a public audience. Your birth is special, private, and yours alone.

We don't depend on your private moments for our public marketing. We depend on our reputation for professional, high-level care.

Liquid gold. Otherwise known as colostrum.

Colostrum is the first milk produced (and may even be present in pregnancy). It is perfect for your baby and will nourish your baby until their nutritional needs change.

Around days 3 to 5, colostrum will transition to a fatty or milk that is lower in protein and is produced in greater volume.

Colostrum is full if the good stuff and has antibodies and nutrients that help prime the immune system too.

Some people describe them as feeling like fish bubbles.

Or butterfly wings... or gas. Those first sensations that might be your baby's movements are exciting and usually very welcome. Unlike the first trimester where the tangible signs of pregnancy may be morning sickness and new bras...those gentle flutters are fun and connect you with your growing child in a way vomiting cannot.

When will you feel your baby? That depends on your body type, where the placenta is implanted and how many pregnancies you have had. Average is 14 to 16 weeks (ish). When did you feel your baby? How would you describe those early sensations?

Not knowing what to expect is always a little scary.

How your birth will unfold is always a bit of a mystery but good preparation makes it better so that you can face with confidence what ever may happen.

How do you prepare?

My best advice is to take a comprehensive and independent birth class - a class that does more than teach you about dilation and effacement. A class that teaches you how to communicate with your providers and with each other about what you need in your labor even as the unexpected may occur.

My second piece of advice is to hire a doula. It's like bringing that really good class with you and she also happens to amazing at hip squeezes. It means you don't have to remember everything. It means you can be who you in birth and have someone there to support that.

It's OK to be nervous about birth, that is actually one of the most common reasons doulas are hired. But preparation makes it less scary!

Today is Rainbow Baby Day. So what is a rainbow baby?

A baby born after a miscarriage or loss is often referred to has a rainbow baby. (I also think of babies placed in families via adoption or surrogacy after a long journey of infertility as rainbow babies.)

I've lost two babies to babies to miscarriage, it's a hard thing no matter the situation. The rainbow is never a replacement for the child that was lost, but it does symbolize how beautiful and amazing it is to bring a baby into the world after such a loss.

As doulas, we see birth a lot and while we take great joy in our clients joy - the rainbow babies often get us in the feels. I'll admit to a few tears when I see them in their parents arms. 💜
