Carl Ray Street, Jr., age 75, of Leland, Mississippi, passed away on May 30, 2026, likely still dog cussin’ the world, leaving behind a legacy of grit, strong opinions, a big, unmistakable laugh, and a habit of pulling people into whatever trouble he had in mind.

Raised in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, Carl Ray was a well-known face around Leland. If he spoke with you for more than five minutes, chances are you walked away with a nickname—or one of his colorful Southern sayings, like things going over “about as well as a fart in church.” He spent his life building deep roots in Washington County and served as a police officer in Leland and Indianola, Mississippi, as well as Memphis and Germantown, Tennessee—a role that suited his bold spirit and sharp instincts. He also worked as a security officer on the side at casinos, concerts, and college campuses.

He enjoyed the simple pleasures—shooting the breeze, riding motorcycles, listening to music, watching wrestling, horror movies, and true crime shows where he usually had his own opinion on how it should’ve been handled, and smoking ci******es.

Carl Ray was the father of two children, Carl Street III (Trey) and Sara “Beth” Street Platt. He raised them with an old-school style and humor, encouraging them to stand their ground, speak their minds, and never lose the ability to laugh at themselves. They will carry his life lessons in their own way, and he left a lasting impression on both of them. He will be deeply missed and forever carried in their own ways.

Carl Ray is survived by his children; his wife, Beky Street; his grandchildren, Christian Platt, Brinley Platt, and Juni Street; and a host of extended family members and friends who will remember him in their own stories. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bobby and June Street, and his siblings, J.M., Helen, and Dana.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Fraternal Order of Police.

Jeannie Behm West, 81, of Leland, Mississippi, died peacefully on Thursday, June 4, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, music, and unwavering devotion to her family and community. A woman whose life was a testament to Christian service, she touched countless lives through her gifts as an educator and musician across nearly six decades of shared ministry with her beloved husband.

Jeannie was born on March 15, 1945, in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of the late Reverend Orville D. Behm and the late Lois Glyn Behm. Raised in a household centered on faith and ministry, she developed deep spiritual convictions and a love of music. Her beautiful voice and remarkable talent at the piano became gifts she would spend a lifetime sharing with others.

After graduating from Logansport High School in 1963, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Northwest Louisiana State University in 1966 and later a Master of Religious Education from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1968, she married Kenneth Wayne West of Gunnison, Mississippi, beginning a loving partnership that spanned 58 years of marriage and ministry.

Jeannie taught at the elementary and middle school levels. For eight years, she also taught adult education courses at Parchman State Penitentiary, demonstrating her belief in the transformative power of learning. From 1969 until 2026, she taught piano lessons, sharing her love of music with generations of students over 57 years. Above all, she was devoted to her family and structured her career to be present for her three children.

Alongside Kenneth, Jeannie served churches across Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi. She directed choirs, led children's music programs, taught Sunday School, and served in numerous ministry roles. More than a dozen of her former students later entered ministry or mission work, reflecting the lasting impact of her example and encouragement.

For 25 years, she was an active member of First Baptist Church in Leland, where she sang in the choir, played handbells, and taught Sunday School. In more recent years, she and Kenneth joined Interstate Baptist Church in Shaw, where Kenneth continues to preach and where Jeannie remained active until shortly before her passing.

Jeannie also found joy in gardening, cooking, traveling, and creating a welcoming home. Her rose garden was admired by many, and her beautifully set table was a gathering place for family and friends, especially during the holidays. She will be remembered for her infectious laugh, impeccable attention to detail, and delicious homemade chocolate meringue pie.

She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her brothers, Don Behm and Robert “Bobby” Behm, and her sister, Joyce Behm Harris. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Kenneth Wayne West of Leland; her children, Natalie West-Collier and husband Michael of Brandon, Mississippi, Grant West and wife Allyson of Anniston, Alabama, and Patricia West-Adams and husband Leith of Salisbury, North Carolina; and her seven beloved grandchildren, Liz, Kathryn, Dagny, Caleb, Eliza, Andrew, and Hannah Kayce.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, June 9, at First Baptist Church in Leland. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m.

The family requests memorials be made to
Interstate Baptist Church, 948 Sandpit Road, Shaw, MS 38773.

Eugene Leslie (Les) Torrans, Jr., 79, of Leland, passed away on Monday, May 18, 2026, at Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland, MS. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no visitation or service. At a later date, the family will have a blessing of his ashes in Fruitport, Michigan. Arrangements are under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Leland.

Born in Fruitport, Michigan, on February 5, 1947, he received his B.S. degree in Fisheries Biology from Michigan State University in 1969. After graduation, he served as an aquaculture extension agent and hatchery manager for the U.S. Peace Corps in Cameroon for four years. Returning home, he earned his Ph.D. degree in 1980 from the University of Oklahoma under Dr. Howard P. Clemens while managing a 40-acre commercial catfish farm. After graduation, Dr. Torrans moved to Arkansas, where he taught several undergraduate fisheries courses and conducted research on channel catfish and tilapia production at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. In 1989, he was hired by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to direct the Southeastern Fish Cultural Laboratory in Marion, Alabama. Before coming to Mississippi in 1999, Dr. Torrans again worked on a commercial catfish farm, this time in west Alabama. In Mississippi, he worked as a Fish Production Specialist for the USDA at the Thad Cochran National Warmwater Aquaculture Center, where he conducted practical research on water quality and aeration in catfish ponds, as well as catfish hatchery design and management. He retired in 2019.

Les is preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Agnes Wurful Torrans and two sisters, Kathie Torrans and Bonnie Torrans.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Bell-Torrans; stepson, Greg Bell (Amanda); grandson, Parker Bell (11); and his beloved dog, Rudy.

Even though Parker’s Poppa Les went home to be with the Lord, and our hearts are heavy, we are incredibly thankful for the time we had with him and the wonderful life he lived.

He was a great friend to so many, the kind of man who never met a stranger and always had time for a story, a laugh, or a helping hand.

A lifelong outdoorsman, he was most at peace in God’s creation, whether he was in the woods, on the water, or simply sitting outside taking it all in with his 4-legged sidekick, Rudy. As the official “fish doctor”, he spent half his life studying catfish up close, talking to them, and then telling us all exactly what they were thinking and needed. If there was a shelter animal that couldn’t help itself, you could count on Poppa Les to step in and do whatever he could to make its life a little easier.

Les lived a wonderful life with great friends. We are grateful for the love he poured into Anna, Parker, and our family, and for the example he set of kindness and quiet strength.

Please keep Anna and the family in your prayers in the days ahead and help us to honor his memory by loving others well, looking out for the ones who can’t speak for themselves, and telling a good hunting/fishing story every now and then in his honor.

RIP Poppa Les, your legacy will continue.
