💡 Educational Spotlight: What Is Placenta Calcification?

​If you’ve ever noticed small, white, gritty flecks or patches on a placenta, you’ve seen placenta calcification! While it can sound a bit intimidating to hear the word "calcification," it is actually a very normal physiological process.

​Let’s break down what causes it and what it means for your encapsulation plans. 👇

​🔍 What Causes Placenta Calcification?

​Placenta calcification occurs when calcium deposits build up within the placental tissue. Think of the placenta as an organ with a set lifespan; as it matures toward the end of pregnancy, it naturally begins to age.

​Common factors and causes include:

​Natural Aging Process: As you reach full term (37–42 weeks), the placenta naturally begins to show signs of maturity, including small calcium deposits.

​Environmental & Lifestyle Factors: Things like smoking during pregnancy or high stress levels can sometimes accelerate calcification.

​Nutritional & Health Factors: Certain dietary factors, high blood pressure (hypertension), or taking certain supplements (like high doses of calcium) can contribute.

​Gestational Diabetes or Medical Conditions: Sometimes underlying medical conditions can play a role in how early or quickly calcification occurs.

​🛡️ Is It Still Safe to Encapsulate a Calcified Placenta?

​Yes, absolutely!

​Calcification is not an infection, nor does it indicate that the placenta is spoiled or unsafe.

​How It Affects Encapsulation: Calcium deposits are simply mineral deposits. During the preparation and dehydration process, these areas are processed just like the rest of the healthy tissue.
