Does therapy encourage family estrangement?

This is a question that's been receiving a lot of attention lately. The reality is that ethical therapy isn't about telling someone to cut people out of their life—it's about helping individuals better understand themselves, heal from painful experiences, and make thoughtful decisions that support their emotional well-being.

Healthy therapy creates space to:
💙 Process difficult emotions
💙 Explore relationship patterns
💙 Learn healthy communication
💙 Set appropriate boundaries
💙 Pursue healing whenever it's safe and possible

For some, that journey leads to stronger family relationships. For others, it may mean creating distance when a relationship remains unsafe or harmful. Those decisions are deeply personal and are never one-size-fits-all.

At Canterbury Counseling we believe healing isn't about choosing sides—it's about helping people find hope, health, and wisdom as they navigate life's most difficult relationships with compassion and care.

If you're struggling with family conflict, you don't have to face it alone. Please feel free to contact us at 864-235-7501 to set up an appointment.

Our therapists had the privilege of facilitating our bimonthly group with residents of the Transitional Living Program at Pendleton Place, focusing on an essential DBT distress tolerance skill: TIPP.

TIPP is a set of quick, body-based strategies designed to help individuals manage intense emotional distress in the moment. During the group, we explored how changing body temperature (such as using ice), engaging in brief intense exercise, paced breathing, and progressive muscle relaxation can help bring the nervous system back into a calmer, more regulated state.

For the youth we serve, these skills are more than techniques—they are tools for empowerment. Learning how to navigate overwhelming emotions safely can support greater self-awareness, resilience, and confidence in daily life.

We are grateful for our continued partnership with Pendleton Place and the opportunity to support young people as they build skills for healing, stability, and growth.
