Sophia is joining our team as she completes her Child Life practicum, gaining hands-on experience supporting children and families throughout their healthcare journey. We’re so excited to have her join our team and begin her Child Life journey with us! Here's a little bit about Sophia!

“I am currently enrolled in ECU’S Child Life Program with the goal of becoming a Certified Child Life Specialist! I am fortunate enough to be currently completing my Child Life practicum at ECU Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic, I have always been super interested in the medical field and hold a very special place in my heart for working with children and their families. Ever since I could remember, I have always been the one to call if someone needed a babysitter or someone to share new facts about the medical field with. I hope to continue to fuel my passion for working with children in families, helping them thrive in such stressful times. I am very excited to be a part of ECU’S Health Pediatric Hematology Oncology Program, as I know I will have countless opportunities to learn and grow from. All thanks to the warm welcoming and support I have been given from this team. I am so excited to see where my journey takes me!”

We’re excited to have Elena join our team and look forward to seeing her put her Public Health knowledge into practice while gaining hands-on experience with our Hemophilia Treatment Center and 340B Program. Here is a little bit about Elena!

“Hello! My name is Elena Dinehart, and I am a senior majoring in Public Health here at ECU. On top of my studies, I am also a member of the ECU Swim and Dive Team, and I am excited to finish my final year of swimming strong!
I have always had a passion for the healthcare field, and I am excited to apply the knowledge I have gained through my Public Health education into my internship with Scott Miller, the Hemophilia Treatment Center, and 340B Program Director. I am looking forward to gaining valuable experiences, learning more about this area of healthcare, and seeing the impact this department has on the community and individuals it works with as well!”

This event is hosted by the Bleeding Disorders Foundation of North Carolina, the Blood Brotherhood and SOAR Weekend at Wrightsville Beach, NC on September 19-20. This event is open to men with bleeding disorders, women and teen girls ages 16 and older, mothers of daughters with bleeding disorders, and anyone with the potential to menstruate.

There will be educational opportunities, networking, and fun activities that will build community, provide fellowship, and support. On Sunday, there will be a hands-on self-infusion and self-injection workshop. This will be a time to gain skills and knowledge. The interactive workshop provides a safe, supportive environment to practice and ask questions, with nurses from local HTCs.

🎉 Please join us in welcoming the newest member of our team, Dr. Christopher Ferrante! 🎉

A North Carolina native, Dr. Ferrante is excited to be back home caring for the children and families of eastern North Carolina. After completing medical school at Campbell University, his pediatrics residency at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, and his pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina, he is bringing his expertise, compassion, and dedication to our team.
Beyond caring for patients, Dr. Ferrante is passionate about teaching the next generation of physicians. When he’s not at work, you can find him spending time with his wife, son, and two dogs, cooking up something delicious, fishing, or exploring North Carolina.

🏴‍☠️💜We’re so happy to have him here and can’t wait for you all to get to know him! Welcome to the team, Dr. Ferrante! 🏴‍☠️💜

Join the ECU Comprehensive Sickle Cell Program for the 5th Annual Tate Holbrook Sickle Cell Disease Update on Friday, September 18, 2026, from 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m. at Eastern AHEC in Greenville!

This free, one-day conference will bring patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals together to learn about the latest in sickle cell care, including clinical trials, bone marrow transplant and gene therapy, mental health, healthy aging, and music therapy.

📍 Eastern AHEC | 2600 W. Arlington Blvd., Greenville, NC
Space is limited to 40 participants. Attendees must be 18+, a patient or direct caregiver, and able to attend the full conference.
