🚨 Concerned about the Cyclospora outbreak?
One of the biggest challenges with the current outbreak is that investigators still haven't identified the food responsible. While the CDC and FDA continue investigating, many experts suspect a commercially grown fresh produce item, but no specific fruit, vegetable, farm, or brand has been identified.
As a Registered Dietitian with ServSafe® food safety training, my recommendation—for now—is simple:
🥗 If you're planning to eat fruits or vegetables raw, consider shopping local whenever possible.
🍽️ If you're purchasing commercially grown produce or dining out, choosing cooked vegetables instead of raw salads is a reasonable precaution until we know more.
This isn't about avoiding fruits and vegetables (please don't!). They're still one of the healthiest foods you can eat. It's simply about making informed choices while we wait for more answers.
Looking for local produce in the Upstate? Here are some great places to shop:
📍 Greer Farmers Market(Sundays — this reel was filmed there!)
📍 Saturday Market (Downtown Greenville • Saturdays)
📍 Travelers Rest Farmers Market (Saturdays)
📍 (Saturdays)
📍
📍 Fisher's Orchard (Greer)
📍 Greenville State Farmers Market
I put together a comprehensive blog post that explains what Cyclospora is, symptoms to watch for, answers common questions about grocery shopping, salads, dining out, pregnancy and breastfeeding, and where to shop locally while we wait to learn more about the source of this outbreak.
