A reminder this month—and every month—to check on your people.

Sometimes hope looks like faith. Sometimes it looks like courage. And sometimes it looks like simply making it through today.

Stay. There is more ahead.

Back-to-school reminder for the adults. 🍎

Kids need boundaries. They need correction. They need accountability. But none of those require shame, humiliation, or cruelty.

The way we treat young people matters—sometimes much longer than we realize.

“…thy gentleness hath made me great.” — Psalm 18:35 KJV

Be firm. Be consistent. Be gentle.

I know this is a lot—but it’s an important reminder.

We’ve spent decades teaching kids about “stranger danger,” but the data tell us that sexual abuse and assault are far more likely to be committed by someone the victim already knows.

That doesn’t mean we should be afraid of everyone around us. It means safety conversations need to go beyond strangers.

Teach kids that boundaries apply to everyone—even people they know, love, and trust. Teach them they don’t owe anyone physical affection, they can trust when something feels uncomfortable, and they can ALWAYS tell a safe adult.

And as adults, we have to be willing to pay attention to inappropriate behavior even when the person doesn’t fit our picture of what a “predator” looks like.

Familiarity is not the same thing as safety.

Five more weeks to soak it in.

Get outside. Take the walk. Find the Petoskey stones. Stay for the sunset.

Summer isn’t over yet.

Learning to paddle your own canoe doesn’t mean you have to cross every lake alone.

Healthy people take responsibility for their choices. They learn to steer when the water gets rough. But they also know when to ask for directions, when to paddle alongside someone else, and when it’s wise to accept a tow.

Self-reliance and connection aren’t opposites. We need both.

Sometimes the strongest thing you can say is, “I can’t do this by myself.”

I’ve heard it said that August is the Sunday of summer and I agree.

The calendar still says summer, but something shifts.

The mornings are a little cooler. The sunsets seem a little softer. The crickets get louder, and somehow campfires feel even better.

Maybe that’s one of the things I love most about living in Michigan—we get to notice the in-between.

There’s no rush to skip ahead to fall. No countdown. Just one more evening on the porch, one more walk, one more sunset over the lake.

Here’s to letting August be August.
