We are starting an series where we’ll introduce our interns and let you get to know a bit about them! First up, we have Dr. Zain Ul Abideen! Dr. Abideen chose ECU Family Medicine because of "the program’s strong clinical training, the diversity of pathology at ECU Health, and the genuine sense of community I felt during my interview.” When he’s not in the hospital or clinic, “you’ll find me near water with a fishing rod, watching planes take off, or getting lost in a new city on purpose.”

NCAFP member Dr. Jessica Zimmerman appeared in a profile article from the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP)! The profile tells how Dr. Zimmerman made the most of nearly a decade at the East Carolina University (ECU) Brody of School of Medicine by choosing Family Medicine for herself and then recommending it for medical students after she became ECU Family Medicine faculty. “As I did my residency training, I looked at the faculty and thought, ‘These are the people I want to be like when I grow up,’” Dr. Zimmerman says. “I wanted to continue the relationships I had with them as colleagues. It felt like I’m meant to be here.”

Thanks to her work as a mentor and faculty advisor to the ECU Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG), Dr. Zimmerman will be honored during AAFP’s FUTURE conference later this month with the Joyce Jeardeau Memorial Award (which recognizes faculty advisors for exemplary support of an FMIG). This past Monday, we welcomed our 2029 class of interns for both our standard and rural family medicine residency programs! Our interns received their white coats while we got to learn a little more about them. From roller-derby lovers to classically trained singers, our new class has a diverse pool of interests and is sure to do great things!

Did you know that this is National Nursing Assistant Appreciation Week? The week is dedicated to recognizing the hard work, compassion, and commitment of nursing assistants who provide essential hands-on care to patients and support to nursing staff as an important member of the patient care team. ECU Family Medicine is thankful to have Taylor Ayers on the Purple Module to provide care and support to our patients. Thank you for your dedication and hard work, Taylor!

It’s and our Medical Director, Assistant Residency Director, and several rural health residents visited the General Assembly to meet with NC lawmakers and speak to the profession of family medicine.

Congrats to our Sports Medicine track family medicine residents and Sports Medicine Fellow who recently traveled to Seattle, Washington for the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Annual Meeting. While there, they presented several posters outlining their work and research.
