We get a lot of questions from patients about what to expect after surgery—especially when it comes to managing pain and discomfort. Here is a look into the items we provide patients in our post-operative bag. These are all meant to ease pain, support digestion, and help your body begin healing smoothly.

Your care team will provide detailed instructions on how and when to take each medication. One common strategy is alternating two types of pain medications every few hours—this can help keep discomfort well controlled without overmedicating.

It’s a common misconception that surgery should be considered a last resort for infertility. Undergoing exploratory surgery early in your fertility journey can help doctors understand and treat the root cause of your struggles.

This procedure may be appropriate if you have:

♥ Unexplained infertility
♥ Multiple failed embryo transfers or IVF cycles
♥ Recurrent pregnancy loss/miscarriage
♥ Signs of endometriosis or pelvic pain
♥ Low AMH, low follicle count, or early ovarian aging/premature ovarian insufficiency
♥ Diagnoses such as PCOS, adenomyosis, or intrauterine scarring
♥ A prior laparoscopy or hysteroscopy that found “nothing wrong,” but symptoms persist
♥ Ectopic pregnancies

If your fertility journey feels stalled and the usual workup has yielded few answers, this may be the step that finally brings the clarity you deserve.

Whether you're preparing for IVF, exploring permanent birth control, or managing an ectopic pregnancy, your care team may recommend a salpingectomy, a surgical procedure to remove one or both fallopian tubes.

At ESSE Care, we specialize in minimally invasive laparoscopic salpingectomy, which allows for precise removal with less downtime and faster healing than open surgery.

This surgery can support your fertility goals, dramatically lower ovarian cancer risk, and help address painful and potentially dangerous conditions like hydrosalpinx, endometriosis, or ectopic pregnancy.

𝐋𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥:
✅ The average menstrual period lasts about 4 to 7 days.
✅ Blood loss averages around 30–40 milliliters (roughly 2–3 tablespoons).
✅ Typically, a person changes a pad or tampon every 4–6 hours, not every hour.

𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 (𝐇𝐌𝐁)—𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐡𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐚—𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐬:
✅ Bleeding longer than 7 days.
✅ Losing more than 80 milliliters (about 5+ tablespoons) of menstrual fluid per cycle.
✅ Soaking through one or more pads or tampons every hour for several hours in a row.

If your period leaves you feeling dizzy or chronically exhausted—or if you’re rearranging your life around your cycle—it’s a strong signal that something more might be going on.

Many of our patients come to us after years of believing this was just “how their body works,” only to learn that conditions like adenomyosis, fibroids, polyps, or clotting disorders were behind their symptoms all along.

Facts you might not know about hysterectomy:

● Approximately 1/3 of women will have had a hysterectomy by the time they turn 60.
● Hysterectomy is the 2nd most common gynecologic procedure performed in the US (behind C Sections).
● Approximately 600,000 hysterectomies are performed in the US each year.

Hysterectomies are performed for a variety of gynecologic diseases, such as endometriosis and adenomyosis. We are just learning that these conditions can have systemic long-term health implications, such as a 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 (stroke, high blood pressure, peripheral artery disease).

Data is inconsistent, but remember, there is no perfect comparison group for patients undergoing hysterectomy (with ovarian preservation) for these conditions versus those without.

Hysteroscopy involves placing a small camera through the va**na, into the cervix, and up into the uterine cavity.

At ESSE Care we often use a touchless technique called vaginoscopy, where we skip the speculum and insert the hysteroscope directly through the pre-dilated cervix. This allows us to view:

𝐨 The angle between cervix and uterine cavity (important for embryo transfer)
𝐨 The internal shape of the uterus
𝐨 The ostia – where the fallopian tubes meet the uterus
𝐨 Any scar tissue, septum, or hidden anatomic concerns

This direct visualization lets us treat problems like fibrous septa, fluid collections, or scarring immediately, without guessing or relying solely on imaging.

You may believe that heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is normal. Many women spend years dealing with HMB—not to mention other uncomfortable symptoms that often come along with it—without ever seeking treatment or an explanation.

But did you know that it could be a sign of an underlying condition like uterine fibroids or adenomyosis? That’s why investigating HMB is so important.

Our free menstrual bleeding tracker helps you easily log each period product used and how full it is when you change it. This detailed information helps you and your doctor understand how much fluid you’re losing each cycle and whether it might be connected to something deeper.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞:

✔️ Three daily charts: One for pads, one for tampons, and one for period cups/discs
✔️ Space to log any clots you see, as these are a sign of heavy menstrual bleeding
✔️ Guidelines for what menstrual bleeding doctors consider abnormal

Is there a risk of cancer in your polyp?

The good news is that the risk is generally low, but it’s not zero. Factors like postmenopausal bleeding, high blood pressure, diabetes, tamoxifen use, larger polyps, or suspicious imaging findings can increase concern and are important to keep in mind when evaluating a polyp.

Every situation is different, which is why these conversations are so important. If you’ve been diagnosed with a uterine polyp and are unsure about next steps, talk with your provider so you can make an informed decision that feels right for you.

Dysmenorrhea is not just a physical burden—it can deeply affect emotional wellbeing, relationships, education, and career aspirations. Among adolescents, it is the leading cause of short-term school absenteeism. Many young people lose multiple days each month to pain, yet nearly 25% never discuss their symptoms with a healthcare provider.

The downstream effects can include:

🔹 Social withdrawal and isolation
🔹 Academic underperformance
🔹 Strained family dynamics or peer relationships
🔹 Feelings of shame, anxiety, or helplessness
🔹 Pain is not a rite of passage. It’s a signal. And it deserves attention.
