August is National Wellness Month, a reminder to pay attention to the practices that support our physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing.
Within kink, wellness also means thinking about what happens before, during and after an intense experience.
Aftercare can look different for everyone. It might include water, food, warmth, quiet, reassurance, physical closeness or time alone. It can also mean checking in the next day, talking through what came up and noticing what the body still needs.
From a Shamanic Kink perspective, self-care can also include simple somatic rituals - breath, movement, sound, grounding, time in nature or intentional touch. These practices can help the nervous system settle and create space to process stress, emotion and intensity.
Good aftercare is not an extra. It is part of the experience.
This month, take a moment to ask:
What helps your body feel safe, supported and restored?
