👁️ How can you optimize healing after blepharoplasty?

Great eyelid surgery recovery doesn’t just start after surgery. Preparing your body beforehand may help support normal wound healing and recovery.

Before upper or lower blepharoplasty, I encourage patients to pay attention to a few nutritional basics:

🥩 Protein — provides amino acids needed for tissue repair and wound healing.

🍊 Vitamin C — plays an important role in collagen formation and normal wound healing.

🥜 Zinc — supports normal immune function and tissue repair. More isn’t necessarily better, so supplementation should be discussed with your physician.

💧 Hydration — staying adequately hydrated supports normal physiologic function throughout the perioperative period.

The goal isn’t a complicated supplement regimen. It’s making sure your body has the basic nutritional building blocks it needs to heal.

As an oculoplastic surgeon in Denver, Colorado, I tell patients that optimizing a blepharoplasty result involves more than what happens in the operating room. Surgical technique matters—but so do preparation, postoperative care, and allowing your tissues time to heal.

If you’re considering upper eyelid surgery, lower blepharoplasty, or cosmetic eyelid surgery in Denver, follow for more evidence-based information about preparing for surgery, recovery, and achieving a natural-looking result.

What does a surgeon actually notice about how we age?

After years of performing eyelid surgery, I’ve noticed something interesting: not everyone’s tissues age the same way.

When I operate, I can see differences in skin quality, tissue elasticity, inflammation, fat, muscle and overall tissue health. Genetics certainly matter—but so does how we take care of ourselves over decades.

Exercise. Nutrition. Sleep. Sun protection. Avoiding smoking. Maintaining a healthy weight. Managing stress. These aren’t just about how you look as you get older. They’re part of how you age.

In this video, I wanted to have a candid conversation—not just as an oculoplastic surgeon, but as someone who is aging too—about something I’ve come to appreciate more and more:

Cosmetic surgery can improve something that bothers you, but it can never replace taking care of yourself.

I don’t think successful aging means trying to look 30 forever. It’s about staying healthy, strong, active and confident—and looking like the best version of yourself at the age you actually are.

Aging well isn’t about trying not to age. It’s about taking care of the person who’s aging.

⚠️ Why I Prefer Under-Eye Filler Removed Before Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

If you’re considering lower blepharoplasty or cosmetic eyelid surgery, one of the most important things to tell your surgeon is whether you’ve ever had tear trough or under-eye filler — even if it was injected years ago.

As an oculoplastic surgeon, there are several reasons I may recommend dissolving hyaluronic acid filler before lower eyelid surgery:

1️⃣ Filler can hide your true anatomy.
Under-eye filler may camouflage hollows, bags and the natural transition between the eyelid and cheek. Removing it can allow the surgeon to evaluate what is actually fat, skin, muscle, fluid or volume loss.

2️⃣ Under-eye filler can contribute to swelling.
Hyaluronic acid attracts water. In some patients, persistent filler can be associated with chronic puffiness or edema around the lower eyelids.

3️⃣ Filler may make festoons or malar bags look worse.
Adding volume doesn’t necessarily correct festoons. In the wrong patient, additional volume or fluid retention can actually make the lower eyelid and upper cheek appear heavier.

👁️ Lower blepharoplasty is not simply about removing eye bags. A good surgical plan starts with understanding the patient’s natural anatomy.

If you’ve had tear trough filler and are considering lower eyelid blepharoplasty, make sure your surgeon knows what was injected, approximately when it was injected and whether it has ever been dissolved.

✨ Sometimes the best eyelid surgery is the one no one notices.

This patient in her 30s didn’t want to look different—she wanted to look like herself... just more refreshed.

Many people think **upper blepharoplasty (upper eyelid surgery)** is only for patients in their 50s or 60s. The reality? Genetics often play a bigger role than age. Some patients naturally develop excess upper eyelid skin or a tired appearance much earlier.

If you’re in your **30s or 40s** and wondering if you’re a candidate, treatment options may include:

👁️ Observation if changes are minimal
👁️ Skincare to improve skin quality
👁️ Botox® to optimize brow position in selected patients
👁️ Filler for volume loss in appropriate patients
👁️ **Conservative upper blepharoplasty** for subtle, natural-looking improvement
👁️ Evaluation for **ptosis (droopy eyelids)**, which is commonly mistaken for “extra skin”

My goal is never to make someone look like they’ve had surgery. It’s to create a result where friends simply say:

*”You look well rested.”*

Natural results come from preserving youthful anatomy—not overcorrecting it.

If you’ve always felt your upper eyelids made you look tired, even in your 30s, it may not be “too early” to explore your options.

✨ Your eyes should look refreshed—not like you’ve had surgery. ✨

One of the most common concerns I hear from patients in Lone Tree is, “I look tired all the time, even when I feel great.”

For this patient, we achieved a natural rejuvenation by combining:

✔️ Upper eyelid blepharoplasty to remove excess upper eyelid skin
✔️ Ptosis repair to lift the eyelids and restore a more open, alert appearance
✔️ Lower eyelid skin pinch to tighten fine wrinkles and smooth the lower eyelids

The goal isn’t to change who you are—it’s to help your eyes reflect how energetic and confident you feel.

Many people don’t realize that heavy upper eyelids can be caused by two different problems: excess skin and a drooping eyelid muscle (ptosis). Treating both when appropriate creates a more balanced, youthful, and long-lasting result.

The biggest mistake I see after upper eyelid surgery? Looking in the mirror at ONE WEEK and assuming that’s your final result.

One week after blepharoplasty, your eyelids are still healing. Swelling is uneven. One eyelid may look different than the other. The crease may appear higher or lower. The scars are still maturing. This is all part of the normal healing process.

Your body doesn’t heal on your schedule—it heals on biology.

I tell my patients the same thing: don’t judge your surgery during the healing phase. The goal at one week is to make sure you’re healing well, not to evaluate your final cosmetic result.

Remember:
✔️ Swelling is normal.
✔️ Asymmetry early on is common.
✔️ Incisions continue to soften over weeks to months.
✔️ Final results take time.

Patience is one of the most important parts of a successful recovery after upper eyelid blepharoplasty.

If you’re considering eyelid surgery in Denver, make sure your surgeon spends as much time educating you about recovery as they do discussing the operation itself. Knowing what to expect can dramatically reduce anxiety during the healing process.

**What Does Upper Eyelid Surgery Really Look Like One Week Later? 👁️**

One thing I’ve noticed about social media is that most surgeons only show the **3-month or 6-month “after” photo.** Those are great—but they don’t answer the question every patient asks:

**”What will I actually look like next week?”**

This patient is **just 1 week after in-office upper eyelid blepharoplasty** in Denver.

This is **normal healing.**

At one week, many patients still have:
✨ Swelling
✨ Bruising
✨ Pink incision lines
✨ Mild tightness of the eyelids
✨ Slight asymmetry from swelling (one eye almost always heals a little differently than the other)

The final result takes time. Most bruising improves over the next couple of weeks, while swelling continues to settle over the following months. Your eyelids gradually soften, and the incision fades as healing progresses.

One of my goals is to show patients **the entire recovery journey—not just the final result.** Understanding what is normal during recovery helps make the healing process much less stressful.

If you’re considering upper eyelid surgery, ask your surgeon to show you **early recovery photos**, not just the finished results. Knowing what to expect is one of the best ways to prepare for surgery.

If you’re wondering whether your heavy upper eyelids are caused by **extra skin, a drooping eyelid (ptosis), or both**, a detailed examination is essential because the treatment is different for each condition.

Is ptosis repair 100% successful? The honest answer is no.

One of the most important conversations I have with patients is about expectations. Whether we’re performing ptosis repair, upper eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), a facelift, or another cosmetic procedure, we’re working with living human tissue—not a machine.

Even when surgery is performed correctly and healing goes well, the body can heal differently than expected. Eyelid swelling, scar formation, tissue elasticity, muscle response, and individual healing all play a role in the final outcome.

For ptosis repair, approximately 1 in 10 patients may benefit from a revision or touch-up procedure to optimize eyelid height or symmetry. That doesn’t necessarily mean the original surgery failed—it reflects the reality that eyelid surgery requires precise adjustments, and healing can vary from person to person.

The same principle applies to many cosmetic procedures. A small percentage of patients undergoing blepharoplasty, facelifts, brow lifts, rhinoplasty, and other aesthetic surgeries may require a revision to achieve the best possible result.

The goal isn’t perfection—it’s the best, safest, and most natural outcome possible. Choosing an experienced, fellowship-trained surgeon who discusses these possibilities before surgery is one of the most important parts of your decision.

Understanding that revisions are sometimes a normal part of surgery helps set realistic expectations and ultimately leads to happier patients.

If you’re considering ptosis repair or cosmetic eyelid surgery in Denver, make sure your consultation includes an honest discussion about outcomes, healing, and the possibility of revision surgery.

**Lower eyelid blepharoplasty isn’t about changing how you look—it’s about helping you look like a more rested version of yourself.**

One of the most common concerns I hear is:
*”I look tired all the time, even when I feel great.”*

In many patients, the cause is **under-eye fat bulging, loose skin, or hollowness** that develops naturally with aging. A carefully planned **lower eyelid blepharoplasty** can smooth the transition between the eyelid and cheek while maintaining a natural appearance—not an operated look.

My philosophy is simple:
✅ Preserve what should be preserved.
✅ Reposition fat when appropriate.
✅ Avoid an over-pulled appearance.
✅ Create results that look refreshed, not obvious.

Every patient is different, which is why the surgical plan is individualized after a detailed examination.

If you’ve been wondering whether your under-eye bags can be improved, a consultation can help determine the best option for your anatomy.
