How Do We Love Well?? Not being “fixed.” Not being judged. But being seen, heard and safe. The way we respond to the people in our lives — our spouse, children, friends and community — has the power to bring peace, healing and connection. Loving well means listening with intention, speaking with grace and allowing Christ to shape our hearts in every relationship. “When a person is seen, listened to and given space to be right where they are without judgment, you can see a visible weight lifted.” In this thoughtful article, Sarah Green, a school counselor at St. Raphael Counseling, reflects on what it really means to love others well and how stronger relationships can transform our mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, St. Raphael Counseling psychologis Randy Vette reminds us it’s important to remember that anxiety is something many of us silently struggle with every day. While healthy fear keeps us safe, anxiety often shows up as persistent worry, racing thoughts or a feeling of being unsafe even when nothing is actually threatening us. This article takes a deeper look at what anxiety really is — the way our minds can get stuck on “future threats,” the impact this has on our well-being and how grounding ourselves in truth can help calm the worries that feel overwhelming. Dr. Randy also offers valuable insight into how faith and practical therapeutic tools can work together to bring clarity and peace. At St. Raphael Counseling, we walk alongside individuals and families facing anxiety, helping them find healing, support and hope through compassionate, evidence-based care rooted in dignity. You’re not alone — support is available, healing is possible and taking the first step toward understanding your mental health is an act of strength. This month, we’re reflecting on how growing up in a screen-saturated world is shaping our children. Dr. Angela Wall, a licensed clinical & school psychologist at St. Raphael Counseling, explores how technology has transformed childhood—affecting kids’ social skills, attention, emotional health and even their spiritual development. Her article traces the shift from a play-based childhood filled with imagination and real-world exploration… to today’s phone-based childhood marked by constant connectivity, comparison, anxiety and loneliness. She highlights the rising rates of youth depression, the impact of social media on girls and boys differently and the four major harms therapists see most: social deprivation, sleep loss, attention struggles and screen addiction. But there’s hope. Dr. Wall offers faith-rooted, practical guidance for parents and grandparents—like delaying smartphones, creating phone-free spaces, encouraging unstructured play and nurturing real-life community. Above all, she reminds us that children grow best through presence, connection and a spiritual life grounded in God, not screens. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and our St. Raphael Counseling team is reflecting on what spiritual formation looks like in the era of constant technology. Today’s children are growing up surrounded by screens, notifications and digital stimulation—often before they’ve fully developed the skills needed to manage it. That’s why this Mental Health Tip of the Month focuses on three core practices that help families create healthier habits at home. One of the most meaningful ways to guide children is by modeling balanced technology use ourselves. Kids are shaped more by what they see than what they’re told and our own patterns around phones and devices set the tone for the household. Creating intentional space for unstructured play is equally important. Real-world exploration, creativity and even a little risk-taking help children build confidence, problem-solving abilities and emotional resilience in ways technology simply can’t replace. And when families take time to openly discuss expectations around screens—whether it’s device-free zones, age-appropriate boundaries, or waiting longer for smartphones—it encourages clarity, connection and shared responsibility. Technology isn’t inherently bad, but navigating it with wisdom and a spiritual lens can make a world of difference in a child’s development. Many parents wonder what to do once their child already has a phone, but Dr. Angela Wall from St. Raphael Counseling reminds us that it’s never too late to make a change. Kids are resilient and with even a short break from their phones—just two to three weeks—families often see remarkable transformation as children become more present, more talkative and more engaged with those around them. Many kids even report feeling happier and more connected when they step away from social media. Dr. Angela encourages parents to rebuild connection through simple, powerful actions: look your child in the eyes, use gentle physical touch like a hand on their shoulder, listen attentively and be fully present. Human connection is what God created us for and no phone can replace that. Learn more in her article: straphaelcounseling.com/ageofscreens

In today’s digital world, our children are growing up surrounded by screens — and psychologists are sounding the alarm. Dr. Angela Wall from Catholic Charities St. Raphael Counseling shares what research is revealing about early and excessive social media use. Around the world, including parts of Europe, some countries are now banning social media for children under 16 — and the concerns are real. Kids are falling behind in social-emotional development, struggling to build interpersonal relationships and missing out on the world around them. Many are becoming more dependent on online feedback, less equipped to solve conflicts and more disconnected from their families, peers and even the beauty of God’s creation. As parents and caring adults, we have a responsibility to help guide them back toward real connection, empathy and healthy coping skills.
