How will the transition to the new waiver structure actually feel for families? The blueprint is starting to emerge. 🔍

Fresh out of the May 20, 2026 DDRS Advisory Council meeting, the state shared the anticipated step-by-step journey for service recipients as Indiana prepares for the upcoming waiver reset.

While there are still pieces of the puzzle left to clear up, MTAC is incredibly excited to see the immense amount of mindfulness and care going into building this foundation. The state is seemingly designing a process meant to eliminate guesswork, ensuring you have all your assessment data and budget details in hand before you sit down to choose your services. This proactive approach hopefully means less stress for families and more collaborative, effective planning sessions with case managers and provider agencies.

MTACF is right here tracking the rollout to ensure your journey, whether a business or a waiver recipient, into the new structure is supported every step of the way.

What's next for youth waiver services in Indiana? Here is what we just learned!

The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) shared crucial milestones for the upcoming youth framework during the DDRS Advisory Council meeting on May 20, 2026 (now available on FSSA YouTube channel).

This major transition represents a massive step forward in building a predictable, sustainable system for families. By using data-driven tools to look closely at milestone development, the state is shifting toward a model that makes sure funding truly matches a young person's daily care needs. While the exact list of available service options is still being finalized by state planners, the structural foundation is being poured right now.

Change can feel daunting, but having a clear timeline and understanding the state's goals allows us to prepare, adapt, and make our voices heard during the planning phases.

MTACF is confident that BDDS recognizes the value and impact of music therapy, and while service arrays haven't been announced yet, our conversations with everyone involved has us confident that music therapy will be represented on this waiver!

What happens when the services someone depends on suddenly change? In a recent article from The Statehouse File, Beth Crain shares how changes to her caregiving services led her to explore Indiana’s self-directed care option. This model allows individuals with disabilities to have more control over who provides their support and how those services are managed.

Stories like Beth’s are exactly why advocacy matters. We believe that when individuals with disabilities can foster confidence and have access to the tools and supports to speak up about what they need and how decisions affect their lives, everyone benefits.

As a two-time participant in The Arc of Indiana’s Advocacy Leadership Network (ALN), once as an Advocacy Fellow and once as a Senior Advocacy Consultant, we are particularly proud to see Beth use her voice to create understanding and help move important conversations forward.

By opening up and sharing her lived experience, Beth is demonstrating how to put advocacy and leadership skills to use. Not only advocating for herself, but also helping others better understand the real-life impact of disability services, caregiving, and choice here in Indiana.
