Services include: Day services for adults at four centers located in Greenwood, Lexington, Saluda and Ware Shoals, residential services (26 community residences, 3 supervised living programs, 4 community training home I’s), and Respite services.

Ashley Bond Brings Home Three Medals from 2026 USA Special Olympics Games

Ashley Bond of Abbeville recently represented South Carolina at the 2026 USA Special Olympics Games in Minnesota as a member of the state's four-player bocce team.

Competing against athletes from across the nation, Bond and her teammates earned an impressive three medals, bringing home one gold medal and two bronze medals.

The 2026 USA Special Olympics Games featured approximately 3,000 athletes, 1,500 coaches, 10,000 volunteers, and 75,000 fans representing all 50 states.

"This is the second time Ashley has participated in the National Special Olympics Games and came home with medals both times. We are very proud of her accomplishments," said Laurie Cordell, Executive Director.

Bond's success is a testament to her dedication, teamwork, and perseverance, and her achievements continue to make Burton Center, the Abbeville community, and the state of South Carolina proud.

NELSON GILCHRIST is Burton Center’s Employment Services EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH for June of 2026.

Nelson has been employed with WESLEY COMMONS in Greenwood since November of 2000. Nelson works in the Culinary Department and helps to make sure that the kitchen and food services are kept clean and safe for the residents.

Nelson is extremely friendly and social. He is well-liked and respected at Wesley Commons and in the community. Nelson says that he wants to continue working until he is able to retire.

We are proud of the job that Nelson does, and the incredible work ethic that he has.

The Sensory Park at Burton Center was named the Janis Burton Boyle Sensory Park today.

Boyle, the niece of Felton and Doris Burton, developed an early love for Burton Center and its services for people with disabilities and special needs. Although Janis lived in Texas, she stayed connected to Burton Center over the years through family visits to Greenwood, newspaper articles, and Facebook. “Janis told my dad she planned to remember Burton Center in her will, and she did. She made a generous gift dedicated to enhancing the lives of the people it serves,” said Jimmy Burton at the naming ceremony today.

Meyata Gould, Assistant Director of Day Services, delivered a beautiful and heartfelt rendition of "Heroes”.

Laurie Cordell, Executive Director of Burton Center, said the naming ceremony was an opportunity to celebrate and honor the memory of Janis Burton Boyle, whose generosity continues to benefit Burton Center and its clients. Cordell also expressed sincere appreciation to the First Presbyterian Women and to longtime supporter Glenda Davis for their unwavering commitment to the park since its beginning.

Through the Janis Burton Boyle Sensory Park, Boyle’s legacy will live on in a beautiful waterside setting thoughtfully designed for individuals with disabilities and special needs.

Burton Center is honored to announce a generous contribution from West Carolina that will directly support people with disabilities and special needs in Abbeville, Greenwood, Edgefield, McCormick, Lexington, and Saluda counties.

“We are deeply grateful for West Carolina’s belief in our work and commitment to making a difference in the lives of the people we serve,” stated Laurie Cordell, Executive Director of Burton Center.

West Carolina is a telecommunications company based in Abbeville, South Carolina, that provides internet, phone, and related services to communities across the state, including Greenwood and surrounding areas.

Burton Center for Disabilities and Special Needs is a non-profit, multi-county agency providing services for people with disabilities and special needs (including autism, intellectual disabilities, head injuries, spinal cord injuries, and related disabilities) in Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, Lexington, McCormick, and Saluda counties. Burton Center’s mission is to Discover and Develop Unlimited Potential. Services are provided to help each person reach their full potential. Services include day services for adults at the four centers located in Greenwood, Lexington, Saluda, and Ware Shoals, residential services (24 community residences, 3 supervised living programs, 1 community training home I), and Employment services.

What a beautiful and elegant Tea Party at the Lexington Day Program! 🌸☕👒

The room was filled with laughter, fellowship, and elegance as everyone gathered in their finest attire, adorned with stunning fascinators and hats. From the beautifully decorated tables to the delicious refreshments and meaningful conversations, every detail helped make the event truly special.

A heartfelt thank you to Mallory Baughman, Activity Coordinator, Jamesha Cook, DSP, and everyone who contributed to making this occasion so memorable. The creativity, joy, and sense of community on display served as a wonderful reminder that some of life’s sweetest moments are shared around a table with friends.

It was a beautiful celebration of friendship, connection, and togetherness—one that will be cherished by all who attended.
