Nobody talks about the weight of being a business owner who serves the community.
Nobody talks about how you carry families in your prayers and in your heart months after the casket is closed. Nobody talks about how you remember the conversations, the tears, the embraces, and the promises you made to families during some of the darkest moments of their lives.
Nobody talks about how you can go home after serving a grieving family, take off your professional smile, and still carry the heaviness of what you witnessed that day.
Nobody talks about the families you find yourself thinking about long after the service is over. The children who lost a parent. The mother who had to bury her child. The husband who walked out of the funeral home without his wife. The wife who is learning how to live without her husband. The families who must figure out how to face tomorrow when yesterday changed their lives forever.
Nobody talks about the emotional toll of being strong for everybody else while quietly processing the weight of what you carry yourself.
And nobody talks about how, as a funeral home owner, you are not simply providing a service. You are walking with people through moments they will never forget. You are entrusted with their loved ones, their memories, their final goodbyes, and sometimes the most vulnerable pieces of their hearts.
At Townes Funeral Home, I understand that this work is bigger than business. It is ministry. It is compassion. It is service. It is recognizing that even after the flowers fade, the programs are put away, and the family returns home, their grief is still there.
And sometimes, my heart is still there with them.
There are families I will never forget. Moments that stay with me. Prayers I continue to whisper long after the service has ended. Because when you genuinely care about the people you serve, you don’t just close a file and move on. You remember. You pray. You care.
This is the part of serving that people don’t always see. The part that doesn’t show up on an invoice. The part that cannot be measured in revenue, business growth, or the number of services completed.
Because the true cost of serving people is sometimes carried in your heart long after the work is done.
I thank God for the opportunity to continue the legacy my father built, but I also recognize that this calling requires more than a business mind. It requires a heart for people, a spirit of compassion, and a willingness to serve even when the weight of it all is heavy.
