Suicidality is much more than the moment of crisis. It’s often a chronic, recurring experience for many people. When we jump into su***de prevention with crisis intervention, we are missing a huge part of the story.
Su***de is complex and cannot be solved by one intervention. Learn how to listen without trying to solve it. Sit in the dark and discomfort for a moment, instead of trying to convince or explain their pain away. Be aware of the language you use surrounding su***de.
Su***de prevention is severely limited if it does not address basic human needs like stable housing, community, access to quality health care, and time to rest. One person cannot hold the responsibility of su***de prevention. It belongs to us all, and to the systems that uphold this suffering.
September is National Su***de Prevention Month. Anyone who has been impacted by su***de loss or suicidality knows how complex and isolating it can be. May we continue to have these conversations, especially beyond this month. ♾️
