As we close out the first week in our new Grinnell location, we are overwhelmed with gratitude. A great deal of time, effort, and care went into this relocation, and we are as inspired as ever to maintain and expand our high-quality care centered on whole-body wellness.

More to come…but first, we rest 🫶🏻😴😅🥳

Today is International Self-Care Day, and we naturally have something to say about it- but make it ✨neurodivergent✨

Self-care is a foundational part of mental and physical health, but is often marketed as a reactive measure rather than a proactive practice of wellness. This mindset can get especially muddy for our neurodivergent friends (and selves).

You might be thinking, “I can’t even do my daily tasks consistently, how do you figure I can create and maintain a self-care practice?” Our loving challenge to that is: self-care is so much more than a skin-care regimen and bubble bath stereotype. For neurodivergent individuals, self-care might look like:

- Bringing your noise-canceling headphones to work or class
- Planning for recovery time after social outings
- Utilizing external reminders for daily tasks (yes, even reminders to eat!)

For the neurodivergent, self-care is more about small adjustments to your environment, routines, and communication practices than pampering yourself once a month. Practicing self-compassion can make your self-care practices more sustainable. You won’t always get everything on your to-do list done. You might feel guilty about needing to shorten or cancel plans. You may doomscroll before bed a few more nights a week than is ideal for you.

Building regulation into your days qualifies as self-care. 🫶🏻

Su***de prevention is so much more than sharing a crisis number.

An estimated 700,000+ people die by su***de each year globally. Research shows that a single death by su***de impacts up to 135 people. Prevention, in its many forms, is vital to public health and to the lives impacted by suicidal ideation, behaviors, and loss.

The stigma of suicidal thoughts or behaviors is embedded in our language, in our beliefs, and in the systems that further perpetuate the mental health concerns experienced by those with suicidal ideation. For instance, saying someone “committed su***de” is a commonly used phrase which can imply moral failure or criminality. Alternatively, “died by su***de” offers a more intentional way to discuss, removing the blame or shame of the individual.

Some su***de prevention includes structural changes via policies, funding, and education. Prevention on an individual level can include learning how to discuss suicidal ideation and normalizing its existence, or checking in on loved ones with a genuine listening ear.

If you are in crisis, use 988 for support. If you have suicidal thoughts, we encourage you to reach out for support. You aren’t abnormal, you aren’t too much, you aren’t alone.

There are so many reasons to love the infrared sauna…and one reason is that it’s coming soon to our new Grinnell location. 🤩❤️

Unlike traditional saunas, which heat the air first, the infrared sauna heats the body directly. This gentle warming means deeper heat absorption, which can help relieve muscle soreness, reduce stress, boost cellular health, and promote relaxation.

At Hope Family Counseling, we believe in whole-system healing. We understand that the mind and body are connected, and that a holistic approach can lead to greater healing. As we move into a new office in Grinnell, we will introduce holistic services to promote overall wellness.

Keep your eyes out for more services we will be offering…so many exciting things to come! 👀
