Charles William Goodrich

Charles William “Charlie” Goodrich, 65, of Malcom, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Charlie was born on June 27, 1961, in Grinnell, Iowa, to Charles Roger and Margaret Mary (Kaufman) Goodrich. He graduated from Brooklyn-Guernsey-Malcom High School with the Class of 1979. He attended the School of Business at Iowa Lakes Community College as part of the Class of 1980. He later graduated from Indian Hills Community College with the Class of 1992, where he studied heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing, electrical systems, and related mechanical trades.

On December 27, 1986, Charlie was united in marriage to Christina Ellis in Montezuma, Iowa. Four sons were born to this union: Justin, Matthew, Zach, and Charlie. Their marriage later ended in divorce.

Throughout his life, Charlie worked in a variety of industries. He spent time working in the Oklahoma oil fields, drove truck on and off for many years, worked at Farmhand in Grinnell, and at the Malcom Co-op. Following his technical education, Charlie worked as an appliance, heating, cooling, and electrical service technician in Brooklyn, Iowa, before establishing his own business, Country Appliance Service. He later returned to the trucking industry for several years and worked as an independent contractor delivering newspapers for the Des Moines Register. He subsequently worked in building and plant maintenance for a business in Grinnell before returning to self-employment.

Charlie is survived by his four sons: Justin (Bethany) Goodrich of Ladora, Iowa, and their daughters, Emery and Macie; Matthew (Kaelyn) Goodrich of Brooklyn, Iowa, and their daughter, Ivy; Zach Goodrich of Brooklyn, Iowa; and Charlie Goodrich of Brooklyn, Iowa.

He is also survived by his siblings: Bert Goodrich of Iowa City, Iowa; Peter (Sue) Goodrich of Malcom, Iowa; David Goodrich of Tama, Iowa; Susan (Murlin) McCain of Malcom, Iowa; Sally (Archie) K***z of Brooklyn, Iowa; Sandy (Jay) Wacha of Ozark, Missouri; Sharon (Joe) Schott of Brooklyn, Iowa; Dale (Ann) Goodrich of Montezuma, Iowa; Joe (Tracey) Goodrich of Greene, Iowa; and Sheila Campbell of Grinnell, Iowa; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Roger and Margaret Mary (Kaufman) Goodrich.

Kevin Sean Huntington

Kevin Sean Huntington passed away on October 15, 2026, at Iowa River Hospice in Marshalltown, following an illness. Smith Funeral Home is assisting with Cremation.

Kevin was born on February 16, 1969, to Walter and Sammie (Myers) Huntington at Travis Air Force Base in Solano County, California. Walter and Sammie divorced in 1976, and that same year, Sammie entered into a common-law marriage with Dick Emmert, who helped raise Kevin and his sisters, Teresa and Paula.

Before he even started kindergarten, Kevin had lived in California, Iceland, and Greece. He attended BGM Schools and graduated with the Class of 1988. He later earned an associate degree in Agricultural Business from DMACC.

On May 23, 1998, Kevin married his best friend, Debra Phipps. Together, they welcomed a daughter, Samantha.

Kevin had a lifelong love of livestock and farming. During his years in 4-H, he won the Iowa State Fair Grand Champion Steer Rate of Gain award three consecutive years. His passion for agriculture remained an important part of his life, and he especially enjoyed living and working on the family farm.

Kevin was a king of karaoke and a lover of all music, with his favorite being old country and western. A devoted sports fan, he especially loved the Iowa State Cyclones. He was also an infamous grill master and chili connoisseur. Kevin loved having a good time and had a special way of bringing life and laughter to any gathering he attended.

Some of Kevin's favorite moments were spent on the family farm, taking rides in his side-by-side with Deb, enjoying bonfires and having a b**r or two, and traveling with his family to California. He also had a special place in his heart for his beloved dogs, Suzy, Sandy, Sierra, and Shyann, and his cats, Cinch and Spur.

Kevin's memory will live on through his best friend and wife of 28 years, Debra; his daughters, Amanda (Mike) Johnston and their son, Jason, of Victor, and Samantha Huntington and her fiancé Adrian Montano of Winona, Minnesota; his sisters, Teresa (Bill) Simonton of Malcom and Paula Grimm of Marshalltown; his brother-in-law, Jay Phipps of Grinnell; his nieces, Ashley Stevens and Kali Smith; his nephew, Ryan (Sarah) Grimm; his great-niece, Andrea; his great-great-niece, Ma'aria; his aunts, Stacy Heinen and Dona Emmert; and several cousins.

Kevin was preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Sammie Emmert and Walter Huntington; his daughter, Abby Kriegel; his father- and mother-in-law, John and Marcy Phipps; his aunts, Carol Vecera, Diane Farrell, Mary Lacaeyse, and Patricia Emmert; his uncle, Dale Emmert; and his grandmother, Vivian Myers.

Merleta Olga Gesina (Schmidt) Roberts

Merleta Olga Gesina (Schmidt) Roberts, the daughter of Henry and Adella (Weiss) Schmidt was born at home on July 7, 1935. She grew up on the family farm that was settled by her Great grandfather, Michael Weiss, south of Victor, Iowa, in Lincoln Township.

Merleta was baptized at her grandparents’ home on July 28, 1935, and was confirmed at St John’s Lutheran Church, rural Victor, in 1948. She attended St. John’s Lutheran School through 8th grade and finished her high school years at Victor where she was Valedictorian of her class of 1953. On June 21, 1953 she was united in marriage to Melvin Duane Roberts at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Merleta and Melvin are the parents of 6 children: Michael, Diana, Julie, Kristy, Brian and Rhonda.

Merleta served in many roles in her church and was active in the Ladies Aid where she served as Secretary and President, and was President of the Williamsburg Zone Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML). Years back, Merleta played the church organ. She provided artwork for the Ladies Aid Annual Booklet, and the Wednesday School Programs.

Merleta had a love for reading, writing, art and painting with oils, sewing, knitting, crocheting, needlework, photography and scrapbooking. With strict German parents, she learned to be generous but frugal and very creative. She loved meeting and making friends with everyone she met. She began writing for the Deep River Record in the early 60s and wrote a weekly column “The Spinning Wheel.” While employed at the Brooklyn Chronicle she also wrote a column “Rural Reflections.” As photographer and feature writer, she earned a 1st place award from the Iowa Newspaper Association for best series, and a 2nd place award as columnist. Merleta worked in several stores at the Tanger Outlet Mall. She was an Amway Distributor for nearly 60 years. She had a Christian book business called Joyful Touch.

After retiring from the Brooklyn Chronicle in 2000, Merleta and Melvin spent a month in Europe, visiting Merleta’s relatives in Germany and even had the privilege of staying in the home where her Great Grandfather Hissenkemper was born and is still occupied by the family. They visited in the family homes of 4 of the 10 French students they had hosted in past summers. Merleta and Melvin also enjoyed an Alaskan Cruise.

Merleta was known for her love of flowers, many of which adorned the church altar, and she named her huge yard her “park.” She loved to be outdoors and her plants provided starts for many family and friends. Her nemesis were dandelions which she daily spent time snipping, trowel in hand, and digging up until she was 90. Merleta loved spending time with friends and family and hosted many gatherings in her backyard “park.”

Merleta’s love for her family, and especially for the little ones leaves an indelible mark on one and all. Her greatest love was her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. You knew where she stood when it came to her faith in God. It was her desire that all know Jesus as their Lord and Savior, too. Merleta was called home by her Lord on Wednesday, October 14, 2026 at Newton Village under Hospice Care.

Merleta is survived by: her sister Doris Wegner, MN; her brother Merle (Peg) Schmidt, Victor. Children Mike (Liz) Roberts, Deep River; Diana Hansen, Ankeny; Julie Roberts, Grinnell; Kristy Farrington, Woodland Park CO; and Rhonda MacGregor, Denison. A visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Sunday, October 18, 2026 at Smith Funeral Home in Victor, IA.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, October 19, 2026 at St. John's Lutheran Church outside of Victor. The funeral service will be livestreamed. A graveside service will be held at Saint John's Lutheran Cemetery following the funeral. A luncheon will be held back at St. John's Lutheran Church following the graveside service.

Merleta’s love for the sanctity of life and Christian education was paramount. She drove her own children to Christian Day School over 22 years. Memorials may be directed to Lutheran Family Services, or Iowa Lutheran School Tuition Organization (ILSTO)

Katie Brown, 91, of Victor, died at Brooklyn Community Estates on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

A public graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, October 22, 2026, at Ohio Cemetery south of Ladora with Pastor Dan Andrews officiating. A luncheon will follow at the Victor Baptist Church.

Emma Louise Edgington

Emma Louise Edgington, 78, of Newton, formerly of Grinnell, passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at her home, surrounded by family and under the care of Affinity Care of Iowa.

A celebration of life gathering will be held at a future date. Smith Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.

Emma was born on September 13, 1948, in Montezuma, Iowa, to John and Dorothy (Gott) Whitehead. She was raised in Montezuma and graduated from Montezuma High School.

On March 11, 1967, she was united in marriage to Roger Edgington. Together, they were blessed with two children, Mike and Michelle. They raised their family in Gilman and Grinnell before relocating to Des Moines and Manchester for Roger’s work. They eventually settled in Newton, where they had made their home for the past 10 years.

Emma devoted much of her life to caring for others. A homemaker at heart, she was always a provider, whether tending to her own home or helping care for someone else’s. She worked as a cook for the United Church of Christ Preschool before becoming a full-time housekeeper. Her caring nature and willingness to help others were evident in both her work and her everyday life.

Known for her stubbornness and strong will, Emma was also deeply caring and devoted to the people she loved. Her family was the center of her world, and she especially treasured time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved following their activities and celebrating the many moments and milestones that made their lives special.

Emma and Roger enjoyed traveling together, especially choosing a destination and hitting the road, often stopping at casinos along the way. Emma also found joy in the simple pleasures of home and family. She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, needlepoint, and canning the vegetables Roger grew. Gardening alongside Roger, tending to flowers and vegetables, and spending time with loved ones brought her happiness.

Emma is survived by her husband of 59 years, Roger Edgington; her children, Mike (Kelly) Edgington and Michelle (Joe) Bracy; her grandchildren, Olivia (Aaron) Burnett, Justin (Kristen) Edgington, Lexy Bracy, Aiden Bracy, and Adi Bracy; and her great-grandchildren, Theodore, Abraham, Fayeanna, Jacob, Cale, Bayler, and Brooklee. She is also survived by her siblings, George (Alice) Whitehead, Jenny (Greg) Fowler, and Vema (Larry) Ozborn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Bill Whitehead, Linda Dontje, and Johnny Whitehead; and her niece, Mellissa Vinton.

Rickey Gene Inman

Rickey Gene Inman, 71, of Malcom, Iowa passed away on October 13, 2026, at his home in Malcom.

A visitation will be held on Friday, October 16, 2026, from 9:00 am to 10:30 am, followed by a funeral service at 10:30 am at Smith Funeral Home in Brooklyn. Burial will be at Hartwick Cemetery in Hartwick, followed by a luncheon at Malcom American Legion Post 733.

Rickey was born on February 24, 1955, in Bloomfield, Iowa to Reed and Neva (Smothers) Inman. He grew up in Flores and graduated from Davis County Community High School in 1973.

On July 1, 1989, Rickey was united in marriage to Debra Van Renterghem at Brooklyn Methodist Church.

Out of high school, Rickey worked for an automotive parts company, before taking a job with the Iowa Pipeline in Des Moines, IA. After leaving the pipeline he took a job at Kinze Manufacturing and worked there until he retired 3 years ago.

Rickey enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, Rolle Bolle, billiards, slow-pitch softball, and had fond memories of playing high school baseball.

One of the toughest days of Rickey’s life was losing his son Jesse.

Rickey is survived by his wife Debra, his daughter, Melissa (Michael) Foels, his grandchildren, MaKenna (Caleb) Heinselman, Chandler (Alicia Griggs) Carl, Madelyn (Austin) Schad, Kayleigh (Jeffrey Johannsen) Inman, Maci Inman, and Brynn Inman, his great-grandchildren, Kohen Johannsen, Raelynn Rose Carl, and Vera Schad, his sister, Shirley Walker, his brother-in-law, Phil Van Renterghem, and many nieces, and nephews.

Chester Willis Simpson

Chester W. Simpson, Jr., age 82, of Montezuma, Iowa, and formerly of Hartwick, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at Serenity Hospice House in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at Hartwick Cemetery. A celebration of life reception and luncheon will follow from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at the Hartwick Fire Station.

Chester W. Simpson, Jr., known as "Junior," was born on August 24, 1944, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to Chester and Lucille Simpson. He was raised in Hartwick and graduated from Hartwick High School. Following his education, Junior enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during his military service. He was a proud veteran and a member of the Victor American Legion and the Hartwick Volunteer Fire Department.

On May 31, 1964, Junior was united in marriage to Mary Thompson. The couple made their home in Hartwick, where they raised their three children, Kim, Matt, and Corey. Junior managed the M & N Grain Store in Hartwick until its closure. He then worked at Kinze Manufacturing until his retirement. Never one to sit idle, Junior continued working in retirement, assisting with grounds maintenance for Poweshiek County alongside his son Corey.

Junior found peace and enjoyment in the outdoors. He especially loved spending weekends fishing and camping with his family. He also enjoyed snowmobiling, mowing, and simply being outside. Above all, Junior treasured time spent with his family. He took great pride in supporting his children and grandchildren, especially at their sporting events, seldom missing an opportunity to cheer them on.

Junior is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Simpson of Montezuma; his three children, Kim (Bubba) Meeks of Chelsea, Iowa, Matt (Renee) Simpson of Montezuma, and Corey (Athena) Simpson of Montezuma; twelve grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, with one more on the way; and his siblings, Jim (Kay) Simpson, Rick Simpson, and Alicia (Ron) Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester "Chet" and Lucille Simpson; his brothers, Larry (Louise) Simpson and Bob Simpson; and sister-in-law Joni Simpson.

Richard Warwick

Richard Warwick, 78, of Ames, and formerly of Grinnell, died on Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 am, Wednesday, October 28, 2026 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor Brian Chitwood officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 10:00 am. A private family interment will be held at Hazelwood Cemetery.

Richard Mitchell Warwick was born on November 4, 1947, in Lafayette, Indiana. He graduated from Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, and attended the Emerson School in Washington, D.C. He worked as a computer operator for two years before enlisting in the United States Army in 1967. Richard served for three years as a small missile repairman, including a 14-month tour in South Korea.

Following his military service, Richard worked in sales for Anabolic Vitamins and sold medical devices before founding Warwick Enterprises in 1982. His entrepreneurial spirit was closely connected to his Christian faith. When Grinnell Christian Church needed to expand its facilities, Richard prayed for a way to help support the project. Not long afterward, he visited a physician who expressed a need for a heel lift to correct differences in leg length. That conversation inspired the Adjust-A-Lift Heel Lift and the business that became Richard’s life’s work. He took great pride in Warwick Enterprises and generously shared the fruits of his success with others.

A devout Christian, Richard was a member of Grinnell Christian Church for more than 30 years and taught Sunday school to junior high boys for more than 20 years. His faith guided his life, his relationships, and his desire to help others.

Richard enjoyed golf, bicycling, jogging, racquetball, fishing, woodworking, and caring for aquariums. He valued ongoing education and personal growth and was always interested in learning something new. Conversations with Richard could range from faith, family, and finances to aquariums and ideas for improving the business. Driven and energetic, he brought determination and enthusiasm to the things that mattered to him.

Known affectionately as “Duker,” “Lettuce,” “Letterman,” and “Big Guy,” Richard also delighted in life’s simple pleasures. A favorite tradition was celebrating his birthday at Hickory Park in Ames, where he enjoyed a complimentary ice cream treat and the happy birthday serenade. He loved every moment of the attention and celebration.

Richard will be remembered for his strong faith, generosity, kindness, and dedication to his life’s work, as well as the many ways he shared his blessings with others.

He is survived by his brothers, Jim Warwick and Ken (Paulette) Warwick; and his nieces, Virginia Warwick (Kevin) and Lisa Warwick (Jon). He was preceded in death by his parents.

Donna Weisskopf

Donna L. Weisskopf, 91, of Grinnell and formerly of Victor, died on Monday, October 5, 2026, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 am, Monday, October 12, 2026 at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor with Pastor Eric Schubert officiating. Her family will receive friends at the visitation held prior to the service beginning at 9:30 am. Interment will be at the Ladora Cemetery at a later date.

Donna Lee Nail was born on July 17, 1935, to Theron and Opal (Gant) Nail of Ladora, Iowa. She was raised in rural Victor and attended school in Victor before graduating from Deep River High School with the class of 1953. Following high school, she worked at GTE in Grinnell.

On June 12, 1954, Donna was united in marriage to Merlin Weisskopf. They were blessed with four children: Dan, Russ, Jeff, and Angie. Donna helped with the family business, Victor Implement and Seed, for more than ten years. They later moved to Atlanta, Georgia and then to Florida. Donna and Merlin’s marriage later ended in divorce. Upon returning to Iowa, she worked in local restaurants before retiring in Grinnell.

Donna was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and volunteered at the Mayflower Community. She enjoyed visiting the Drake Community Library in Grinnell. Donna also took up the hobby of painting, creating many beautiful floral paintings. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and attending her grandchildren’s school and sporting events. Any opportunity to be together with family was special to her.

Donna is survived by her children, Dan (Peggy) Weisskopf of Victor, Russ (Sheila Soppe) Weisskopf of West Union, Jeff (Justine) Weisskopf of Marengo, and Angie (Rick) Radcliffe of Grinnell; 10 grandchildren: Matthew (Stacia) Weisskopf of Victor, Brett (Danielle) Weisskopf of Victor, Chad (Vanessa) Weisskopf of Williamsburg, Trisha (Daloy) Veldhouse of Oskaloosa, Sion (Amy) Fontinel of Marengo, Sarah (Jason) Verretta of Parker, CO, Erin (Travis) Henkle of Malcom, Steven (Anna) Hawkins of Waukee, Morgan (John) Beck of Deep River, and Monica Radcliffe of Bondurant; 22 great-grandchildren: Drew, Derek, Dylan, Devon, Cael, Belle, Drexton, Drake, Shaun, Andrea, Caden, Cole, Hannah, Logan, Olivia, Lyle, Laila, Nora, Emelia, Bennett, Beau, Banks, Baylor and Breck; four great-great-grandchildren: Ember, Rayne, Jase, and Asher; and her sister, Marion Tanke of Williamsburg.
