The mountain is the method. sharpens you. equips you. captures it.

CPR/BLS training at the Guffey fire station this week, led by Barry and Millie Picker and supported by Chief Red. Kurt, Dave, Sam, and Sandra — the crew that keeps Golden Forge running — were on that floor getting certified. Kurt and Dave also happen to be Guffey volunteer firefighters (Kurt an EMT as well!). Part of the community we serve. Part of the team doing the serving. That’s Golden Forge.

Pack and Purpose

Two days in the Colorado mountains, ten horses, a pack string, a wall tent camp, and a small group of veterans who understand exactly where you have been.

Pack & Purpose is a Heroes' Harvests horsemanship retreat running July 10-12, 2026 at Golden Forge Ranch, built around the belief that every veteran still has a mission and that mission does not end when their service does.

If you have been searching for purpose since you left the military, this one is for you. You will learn real horsemanship and pack animal skills rooted in special operations traditions, build genuine camaraderie with fellow veterans, and leave reconnected to the three things the military gave you that transition took away: Mission, Skill, and Tribe.

This event is grounded in faith in the Lord, the grit you already carry, and the conviction that healing happens when you are placed back in creation and given something hard to do.

Applications are open now through June 30th at www.heroesharvests.org, with space for only five participants, so do not wait on this one.

This is Barry Picker. Our Emergency Readiness Architect.

EMS Captain. AEMT. Over two decades running emergency operations for his district.

Barry built the entire safety and emergency action framework for Golden Forge’s summer programming — every event, every contingency, every plan, all the gear and equipment.

He didn’t have to…He chose to…That’s who he is!

We don’t take that lightly - thanks Barry!

The children Captain Mike Parrish (right) pulled from the rubble in Oklahoma City in 1995 were Dylan’s age.

Dylan (left) grew up to become a Marine.

They found each other on a mountain in Colorado.

That’s who comes here.

Some days you need people. Some days you need this. We’ve got both. Who wants to ride bikes?

Learning that this is what it ‘feels’ like when people gather around something worth building.

This is what community looks like. Guffey always shows up. Thank Tom, Gary and Tim (for supervising), Kurt, David, Sandra, Morgan, Clinton, The Longs, …and as always Sam for helping bring this crazy vision to life.

Golden Forge is sponsoring seats for veterans and first responders in the June 8–12 Backcountry Horsemanship & Wilderness Medicine course — a five-day intensive operated by Rugged Mountain Outfitters in partnership with Orion Medical Consulting, hosted here on the ranch at 8,600 feet in the Colorado Rockies.

This course was built around a simple reality: when you’re hours from the nearest road and something goes wrong, you need to be able to manage horses and pack animals under stress, assess a patient in the field, control hemorrhage, treat trauma, and plan an evacuation — without waiting for help to arrive.

Over five days you’ll integrate basic horsemanship and pack animal operations with wilderness medical response, because those skills don’t exist in isolation in the backcountry.

You leave with two certifications: Wilderness First Aid and a Certificate of Completion in Basic Horsemanship and Pack Animal Operations.

More importantly, you leave ready.

Spots are limited. Email [email protected] by May 23 to be considered for a sponsored seat.
