Visual symptoms are common in tick-borne disease, but they are often misunderstood or overlooked. Vision is more than eyesight, it’s how the brain processes space, movement, balance, and the world around us. When the visual system is disrupted, symptoms like dizziness, light sensitivity, imbalance, motion sensitivity, cognitive fatigue, and spatial disorientation can result. At the Padula Institute of Vision, we evaluate the neuro-visual system and help patients restore function, stability, and quality of life through individualized rehabilitative care.

For most people, a trip to the supermarket is just another errand. But for someone living with a neuro-visual dysfunction, it can feel completely different. If you’ve ever left the supermarket feeling exhausted, dizzy, anxious, or overwhelmed and wondered why, you’re not alone. Sometimes the problem isn’t your eyesight. It’s how your brain processes visual information. At the Padula Institute of Vision Rehabilitation, we help patients better understand the connection between vision, balance, movement, and the brain so they can navigate everyday environments with greater confidence and comfort. If this describes someone you love, share this post with them. They may discover they’re not alone.

Now we’d love to hear from YOU! Has a supermarket, airport, mall, or another busy environment ever left you feeling unexpectedly overwhelmed? Tell us about your experience in the comments. Your story may help someone else finally feel understood.

What if one of the biggest keys to improving your ride isn’t changing your horse… it’s changing how you understand vision? As riders, it’s easy to assume horses see the world the way we do.

They don’t.

The equine visual system is remarkably different from our own. Horses have an expansive field of view, rely on movement to gather visual information, and process their surroundings in ways that directly influence how they respond to the environment. That means a hesitation, a spook, or even what appears to be stubbornness may not always be what it seems. Understanding how horses perceive the world is the first step toward better communication, greater trust, and true synchrony between horse and rider. This is exactly where Dr. Padula begins in Part 1 of the Neuro-Visual Integration in the Equine-Rider series: Hardware Divergence: The Evolution of Sight. Stay tuned as we continue exploring how vision shapes movement, balance, and the connection between horse and rider.

To the world, he’s a pioneer. As a founder of the Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association, Dr. Padula has spent a lifetime helping patients find answers when others could not. A visionary, innovative thinker, dedicated clinician, teacher, researcher, and problem solver, he has changed countless lives and helped shape the field of neuro-optometric rehabilitation through decades of innovation, research, and patient care. He solves some of the most complex clinical mysteries and cares for people in ways many will never fully know.

But to his family, he’s a devoted husband, dad, and grandfather. He’s the lap babies crawl into, a snow sledding partner, rock climber, birdhouse hanger, fishing buddy, grandfather who happily dresses up for Halloween, and proud guest at American Girl doll tea parties. He’s the one cheering from the sidelines, telling stories around the table, lending a hand when it’s needed, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. While many know him for the lives he has impacted through his work, those closest to him know him for something even greater: his unwavering love for his family.

Happy Father’s Day, Dr. Padula. With gratitude for the countless lives you’ve touched, both in the clinic and at home.

Last week, Dr. Padula had the opportunity to present at MagnaCon , exploring the connection between vision, posture, balance, and equestrian performance. For decades, Dr. Padula has worked with individuals whose posture and balance were affected by neurological conditions, injury, Lyme disease, and other challenges. Through his research into neuro-visual processing and Visual Midline Shift Syndrome (VMSS), he discovered that changes in visual perception can significantly influence posture, balance, and spatial orientation. Over the years, that work naturally expanded into the equestrian world, where rider alignment and spatial awareness play a critical role in performance. Dr. Padula has found that helping riders optimize visual-spatial alignment can have a significant effect on how they center and position themselves on the horse, supporting greater harmony between horse and rider. Thank you to MagnaCon and MagnaWave for the opportunity to share in this growing area of interest. This is just the beginning of the conversation. In the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more about the story behind Equine Sports Vision, how this work evolved from decades of research in posture and balance, and where it may lead in the future.

Here at the Padula Institute, “V” is for Vision!
This Valentine’s Day, we’re reminded that vision is more than eyesight. Nearly 70% of the brain is involved in vision. It influences how we move, focus, regulate, and experience the world around us. When the visual system is under stress, it can affect far more than clarity on a chart. When it improves, lives change. We are grateful for the patients and families who trust us with their care every day.
Happy Valentine’s Day from the PIV team❤️
