December is National HIV/AIDS prevention month.

Did you know that HIV/AIDS can be passed from mother-to-child anytime during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. This is called perinatal transmission.

If you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant, get tested for HIV as soon as possible. If you have HIV, the sooner you start treatment the better—for your health and your baby’s health and to prevent transmitting HIV to your s*x partner. If you don’t have HIV, but your partner does, ask your doctor about medicine to prevent getting HIV, called pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

If you have questions or concerns about this, please contact your provider as soon as possible. Below is a link to a CDC website that will share more information on this matter.

These social media images contain updated data about HIV and pregnant women, infants, and children, and are available for sharing.
