Drowning remains one of the leading causes of death in children, especially children ages 1-4. Be safe this summer around open water by following some simple steps:
-Designate an adult to be in charge of watching the children around the water. Rotate shifts every 15-30 minutes so adults can have fun too.
-Ensure your child's flotation device is appropriate size for their weight.
-When in the water with your younger children, keep them within arms length.
-If able, get swim lessons as early as possible. Check your local resources for information about swim lessons in your area.
-Know how to recognize drowning. It isn't flailing in the water. It is very silent.
-Wear colorful clothes in the water that can easily be seen in the particular body of water you're swimming in.
