Fall has officially arrived, but that doesn’t mean allergy season is over. 🍂

Ragweed can linger until the first frost, while mold thrives in damp piles of fallen leaves. If your symptoms tend to follow you into fall, one of these seasonal allergens could be the reason.

September can be especially tough on asthma.

Ragweed pollen is still in the air, just as respiratory illnesses begin spreading after students return to school. Together, they can make asthma symptoms harder to control.

Pay attention to changes like:
😮‍💨 More frequent coughing or wheezing
🌙 Symptoms that interrupt sleep
🏃 Trouble keeping up with usual activities
💨 Using quick-relief medication more often than usual

If you’re noticing a change, a board-certified allergist can help determine what’s behind your symptoms and recommend the right next steps.

Allergens can show up throughout the school day in places parents may not expect. 🏫

Here’s what could be hiding:
📚 Dust mites in carpets, old books or fabric-covered furniture
💧 Mold in damp areas or older school buildings
🐾 Pet dander carried in on other students’ clothing
🍎 Food allergens in cafeteria meals or shared snacks

Make sure school staff know about your child’s allergies and what to do if symptoms appear.

Your allergies don’t always stay the same when your location changes. 🗺️

Different plants and climates affect which allergens are in the air and when pollen levels rise. That means moving or traveling to another part of the country could introduce triggers you’re not used to.

Our regional guide explains how allergy seasons vary across the U.S., so you can know what to expect wherever you are.

COVID-19 Update: 03/20/2020
In accordance with the Illinois Shelter in Place order, in effect from Saturday 3/21 through Tuesday 4/7, Allergy & Asthma Consultants advises:

1. Current patients should postpone all non-essential appointments. This includes yearly re-evaluations for prescription refills and interval wellness checks. All patients who consider their allergic conditions to be stable should reschedule their appointment to a later date.

2. New Patient appointments that are not of an urgent matter should be postponed. Patients with poorly controlled respiratory, nasal or skin conditions will still be seen.

3. Patients in the build-up phase of their allergy injections should come less frequently; a three-week interval between injections is advised.

4. Patients receiving biologic injectable medications for asthma, hives and eczema are encouraged to maintain their injection schedule with regularly scheduled follow-ups.

5. Office hours remain unchanged at this time. Patients may still call with questions regarding their healthcare needs. Please contact your pharmacy to have a refill request sent to our office.

Our goal is to safely guide patients and staff through the COVID-19 pandemic while providing optimal care at minimal risk.

Thank you for your cooperation with these guidelines.

For everyone’s safety and health if you are sick, have a cough, fever, difficulty breathing or have traveled to a COVID-19 affected region we recommend you contact your primary care physician and reschedule your appointment with AAC.
Updated: Monday March 16th 2020
As this situation is fluid and evolving, we will update content as needed.

The health and well-being of our patients, staff, and community is our first priority. Amidst growing concern around Coronavirus (COVID-19), we are adhering to the CDC and IDPH guidelines to prevent viral transmission and to ensure your safety in our offices.

What AAC is doing:

Prevention Screening

• AAC will be contacting all patients prior to their scheduled office visits in order to reiterate and confirm a health status check as recommended by the CDC.
• Patients presenting with COVID-19 symptoms – fever, cough and/or shortness of breath – will be rescheduled per CDC guidelines and their referring MD will be notified.
• Those patients who fall into a “high risk” category, including patients who have traveled to known COVID-19 “hotspots”, even if they are asymptomatic, will be asked to reschedule their appointment 14 days from the date of their current appointment.
• Out of an abundance of caution, AAC will be recommending that patients over the age of 60, as well as patients with known immunocompromised conditions such as cancer and diabetes, consider rescheduling their appointments.

Cleaning

• AAC always follows the highest level of sanitization guidelines. We have enhanced these preventive measures in order to protect our staff, patients and the community at large against any additional risk factors associated with the spread of COVID-19.
Appointments

• All offices will remain open and available for patients, for the immediate future. However, provider schedules may change with little or no notice to ensure adequate coverage.
• We advise immunotherapy patients currently on weekly injections to consider lengthening the interval between injections to every 3 weeks.
• Medication refills will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

TeleHealth

• Many allergic conditions can be evaluated and treated with a phone call or a telehealth interview. We are currently working out the details to offer this service shortly.
