What is a hearing loss emergency?!

Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a devastating hearing loss emergency that is a sudden change in hearing..usually on one side, usually without any obvious trigger or cause. Without timely diagnosis and treatment, permanent hearing loss can result.

Symptoms can include sudden onset of hearing changes, ringing in the ears, or fullness/clogged sensation.

Diagnosis is made with a history, physical exam and hearing test.

Treatment usually includes high dose oral steroids, an injection of steroids through the eardrum or both and is ideally started as soon as symptoms start. Further imaging to rule out other causes may also be needed.

If you swipe, you will see pre and post-treatment hearing tests of a patient with a sudden onset of significant hearing changes and the inability to understand ANY words presented to that ear. With treatment started right away, the patient had near total recovery of hearing within a couple of weeks!!

Nosebleeds (Epistaxis) are very common in adults and children, especially in the winter months.

They are most commonly triggered by damaged blood vessels within the nose. The most common causes of nosebleeds, especially in children, are dryness within the nose and nose picking. However, nosebleeds can also be caused by other more serious conditions such as clotting or bleeding disorders, high blood pressure, anticoagulation medications, nasal trauma, tumors, etc.

The best ways to prevent MOST nosebleeds is by keeping the nasal tissue moisturized. Here are the most common methods of nosebleed prevention.

- Nasal saline sprays
- Nasal saline gels
- Humidifier at home
- Avoid smoking
- Keep fingernails short (especially in children)
- Avoid nose picking and nasal trauma
- Avoid dry environments
- Avoid blowing your nose or lifting heavy objects/straining after a recent nose bleed

Make sure to call or see your doctor if you have any questions about your nosebleeds, especially if you have recurrent nose bleeds or your nosebleed wont stop!

What is an Otolaryngologist?

Otolaryngologists like myself, more commonly known as Ear, Nose, Throat doctors, are specialists with expertise in the medical and surgical management of diseases of the head and neck.

Becoming an Otolaryngologist usually requires going to college, then 4 years of medical school, and then finally an additional 5 years of surgical training during residency.
