October is a busy month!
Five Fridays, five Saturdays, and a Halloween that won’t fall on a Saturday again until 2037.
Here are six dates and details to keep in mind.
1️⃣ Five Fridays
October’s Fridays fall on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th, giving the month five Friday nights.
2️⃣ Five Saturdays
The Saturdays fall on the 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, and 31st. That last one gives Halloween a weekend slot.
3️⃣ The Orionid meteor shower
The Orionids are expected to peak around October 21–22 as Earth passes through debris left by Halley’s Comet. Those tiny particles burn up in our atmosphere, producing bright streaks across the sky.
Look during the hours before dawn, ideally after the moon has set. A bright waxing moon will interfere with viewing earlier in the night.
4️⃣ The Hunter’s Moon
October’s full moon arrives on October 25 or 26, depending on your time zone. Across the U.S., watch for it rising around sunset on October 25.
“Hunter’s Moon” is a traditional seasonal name. It does not mean the moon will have a special color.
5️⃣ A Saturday Halloween
October 31 falls on a Saturday this year. The next Saturday Halloween won’t arrive until 2037, an 11-year wait caused by the shifting calendar and leap years.
6️⃣ An extra hour after Halloween
In most of the United States, daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 1. Clocks move back to 1 a.m., giving that night a repeated hour.
