When parents think of therapy, they often picture talking. But for children, especially younger children, play is their natural language.

Research consistently supports play therapy as one of the most developmentally appropriate and effective forms of treatment for children, particularly those under age 13. Children often lack the words, insight, or emotional awareness needed to fully explain what they are experiencing. Through play, however, they can express feelings, process experiences, build coping skills, and strengthen their ability to navigate the world around them.

Play therapy is much more than "just playing." A trained play therapist uses the therapeutic powers of play to help children work through challenges such as anxiety, ADHD, emotional regulation difficulties, social concerns, grief, trauma, family transitions, and more.

At Warren County Play Therapy, we believe all behavior is communication. Through play, children can communicate thoughts, feelings, needs, and experiences that may be difficult to express with words alone.

Calm Kids Summer Camp | July 6–10 | Ages 6–12

We blend art, movement, mindfulness, friendship-building, and play therapy games so kids can grow confidence without pressure. Think connection over chaos. Regulation over overwhelm. Belonging over “fit in.”

A “safe place” visual can be a powerful healing tool for children. When kids practice imagining or creating their safe place, they are building an emotional anchor they can return to whenever they feel overwhelmed, lonely, scared, or unsure.

In dysregulated moments, the brain often struggles to find calm on its own. A familiar safe-place image gives children something steady to hold onto — a reminder that comfort, protection, and support are always accessible, even when big feelings show up.

Over time, this simple practice strengthens emotional regulation, confidence, and the belief: “I know how to help myself feel safe.”
