For the first few days of your baby’s life, he or she may have a lot of mucus in their nose or throat. A baby’s gag reflex can be triggered by too much mucus, so they may appear to choke if there are excess secretions in their mouth. Sometimes babies even spit up or vomit after coughing to clear the mouth and nose of excess mucus.

Review these answers to common questions about mucus and always reach out to your child's pediatrician with any questions or concerns.

Research finds that 40% of toddlers between 1 to 3 years use screens in the 30 minutes before bed and 65% of children under 14 years use screens in the 30 minutes before bedtime (Brambilla et al 2017). Nearly half of teenagers continue using screens after bedtime when they are supposed to be asleep (Gamble et al 2014).

Yet, research consistently finds that screen time in the evening hours is linked to difficulty falling asleep, less sleep overall, daytime tiredness, and increased risk for nightmares (see Lund et al., 2021 for review). In addition, screen time before bedtime may be associated with an increased risk for nightmares.

Screens around bedtime may impact sleep because they emit blue light, involve exciting or anxiety-provoking content, and may get in the way of practices known to improve sleep (consistent bedtime routine and time outside).

Swipe ➡️ for practical tips for minimizing the impact of evening screen time on sleep!

Reading aloud with children can create strong bonds with loved ones and helps your child develop and learn. A child with Short Attention, High Activity Level, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may be very active or have trouble following directions, waiting, or taking turns. But your child will enjoy cuddling with you and sharing a colorful or interesting book, even for a short time. Over time, reading aloud can help motor skills, speech and language development, and play.

If your child has ADHD, reading with your child for longer periods of time can be difficult. Consider implementing these 5 tips into your next reading session:
1. Sing along while reading the book.

2. Talk about the pictures and read the story. Help your child point to objects in the book. Ask questions about the story to hold your child’s interest.

3. Break up reading with play.

4. Continue to read for a few more minuets even if your child starts doing something else. A child may still be listening to the story even while playing.

5. Read before naps and bedtime to help them settle down.

Keeping your little riders safe on two wheels! Here are some essential bike safety tips to keep in mind:

🚴‍♂️ Ride with traffic and use hand signals: Teach your child to follow traffic rules and use appropriate hand signals.

🚴‍♂️ Wear a properly fitted helmet on every ride: Helmets are crucial for protecting their head in case of a fall.

🚴‍♂️ Avoid riding at night: Visibility is reduced at night, increasing the risk of accidents.

🚴‍♂️ Master hand signals before riding in streets: Ensure your child is comfortable and confident using hand signals before allowing them to ride in traffic.

Nearly every parent who has an additional child after their firstborn worries about how their older child will adjust to this incredibly major change in their family. Many popular books and social media accounts claim to have the method for preparing your child for the birth of a sibling, yet most are not research-based. For example, there is no research study suggesting that the baby give a present to the older child or that parents should not hold the baby when the older child enters the room, yet this is often the only advice parents get. It would be very helpful to have research-backed tips that actually acknowledge that this transition lasts beyond the point that children meet their baby siblings in the hospital!

So what can research tell us about the older sibling’s adjustment to having a new baby sibling? How hard is this transition really? Is there anything you can do as a parent to make this transition a little easier? Is there any way to help yourself as a parent through this transition?
