🧠 Cognitive Therapy: Strengthening the Skills Behind Everyday Life!💬

Did you know Speech-Language Pathologists can help with more than speech and language? Cognitive therapy targets the thinking skills we use every day—including memory, attention, problem-solving, organization, reasoning, and executive functioning.

Cognitive-communication difficulties can occur following a stroke, brain injury, neurological condition, illness, or other changes in cognitive functioning. These challenges may make everyday tasks like remembering appointments, following directions, managing medications, organizing responsibilities, or communicating effectively more difficult.

At our clinic, we work with individuals to build practical strategies and skills that promote greater independence, confidence, and participation in daily life.🧠✨

If you or a loved one is experiencing changes in memory, attention, organization, or problem-solving, cognitive therapy may be able to help.

🌟 ST GRADUATE 🌟

Another one of our patients has officially graduated from speech therapy after successfully meeting all of his voice and cognitive goals following a stroke! 🎉

Throughout his recovery, he worked hard to strengthen cognitive skills including memory, attention, problem solving, and overall cognitive function, while also improving his voice for clearer, stronger, and more effective communication.

Congratulations on this well-deserved milestone! We are so proud of the progress you’ve made and wish you continued success as you carry these skills into everyday life. 👏🏼💙

🥤 MBSS vs. FEES: What's the Difference?

If you've ever been told you need a swallowing evaluation, you may have heard the terms MBSS or FEES—but what's the difference?

Both assessments are considered the gold standard for evaluating swallowing, and both help us determine the safest and most effective treatment plan. While they have the same goal, they provide different information and one may be more appropriate than the other depending on your symptoms and medical history.

🩻 MBSS (Modified Barium Swallow Study)
• Performed using X-ray and barium-coated foods and liquids
• Allows us to view the entire swallowing process from the mouth through the upper esophagus
• Helpful for evaluating how food and liquids move through the swallow

👃 FEES (Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing)
• Performed using a small flexible camera passed through the nose
• Provides a detailed view of the throat, voice box, and airway protection during swallowing
• Can be completed at the bedside or in the clinic without radiation

Neither test is "better" than the other—they simply answer different questions. Your speech-language pathologist and physician will recommend the evaluation that's best suited to your individual needs.

If you're experiencing coughing during meals, frequent choking, food getting stuck, unexplained weight loss, or recurrent pneumonia, a swallowing evaluation may be an important first step toward safer eating and drinking.

📢 Speech Milestones by Age

Every child develops at their own pace, but knowing what to expect can help you recognize when extra support may be beneficial. 💙

Speech and language development goes hand-in-hand with feeding, play, and everyday experiences. As children grow, they also reach important oral motor and feeding milestones—like transitioning from purees to table foods, weaning from bottles and pacifiers, and learning to use cups and utensils.

✨ Keep in mind that these milestones are general guidelines, not strict deadlines. If your child isn't meeting every milestone exactly on time, it doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong. However, if you have concerns about your child's speech, language, feeding, or swallowing skills, early intervention can make a significant difference.

At Texas Elite Therapy Team, we're here to support your child every step of the way—from infancy through school age and beyond.

Have questions about your child's development? We'd love to help! 💬💕

❓FAQ Friday❓

Q: What ages do you see?

A: All ages! 💙

Our services begin at birth with lactation consultations to help support feeding and your little one's development from day one. From there, we continue helping children, teens, adults, and older adults with a wide variety of speech, language, cognitive, voice, swallowing, and feeding needs.

We also have therapists providing services in several surrounding nursing homes, so we're able to care for patients throughout every stage of life.

No matter your age or where you are in your journey, we're here to help you communicate, eat, swallow, and thrive. 💬✨

Have another question you'd like us to answer in a future FAQ Friday? Let us know in the comments! 💙

🧸✨ Learning happens through play!

One of the best ways to build communication skills is by making language meaningful. Today we worked on functional language by practicing prepositions like on, under, behind, next to, and in front of during play. These everyday concepts help children better understand directions, describe what they see, and communicate with confidence.

Every game is an opportunity to learn! 💙

📚🎒 Back-to-school means more than homework—it means lots of stories waiting to be shared!

Instead of asking, "How was school?" (and getting the classic "Fine." 😅), try asking open-ended questions that encourage your child to talk about their day.

These simple conversation starters help build:
🗣️ Language skills
💬 Conversation skills
🧠 Memory and recall
❤️ Family connection

Whether you're chatting at the dinner table or during the drive home, taking just a few extra minutes to talk can make a big difference in your child's communication development.

✨ Which question do you think your child would enjoy answering the most?

😊 Bell's Palsy can affect more than just your smile.

Bell's palsy is a sudden weakness or paralysis of the muscles on one side of the face caused by inflammation of the facial nerve. It can make everyday activities like speaking, smiling, eating, drinking, and even closing one eye more difficult.

Many people don't realize that speech-language pathologists can play an important role in recovery. Through individualized therapy, we can help improve:
🗣️ Speech clarity
😊 Facial muscle strength and coordination
🥤 Safe eating and drinking
💬 Communication confidence

The good news? Most people begin to recover within weeks to months, and early treatment can make a big difference.

If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of Bell's palsy, talk with your healthcare provider to determine the best treatment plan. Our team is here to help support your recovery every step of the way. ❤️

Have questions about how speech therapy can help? We'd be happy to answer them!

Breastfeeding is a journey, and every family’s experience is unique. During World Breastfeeding Week, we're celebrating the importance of supporting parents and babies every step of the way.
