Founded in 1833, The Children’s Center of Hamden offers a continuum of behavioral health, psychiatric, and special education services helping vulnerable individuals excel in their homes, schools, communities. The Children's Center of Hamden offers a full array of services ranging from outpatient therapy to after school treatment programs, special education and residential programs addressing a var

iety of conditions and circumstances. While each program provides its own specialty, generally speaking the children suffer from one or more of a variety of problems; psychological and social problems; physical and/or sexual abuse; learning disabilities; substance abuse; and family trauma.

Earlier this month, our Extended Day Treatment (EDT) program, in collaboration with Self Management and Recovery Training (SMART), hosted a back-to-school event for EDT students.

Participants received backpacks, notebooks, pencil cases, hygiene products, coloring books, fidgets, and planners. They also engaged in back-to-school-related activities, such as decorating pencil boxes, setting goals for the school year, and exploring how to be kind to one another. Plus, students got the opportunity to make tie-dye shirts and play yard games!

When Mikey first arrived at The Children’s Center’s Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF), he was scared.

He stayed close to his mom, avoided other children, and hadn't been to school in months.

By the time he completed the program, he was walking into school each day, making friends, and celebrating accomplishments he never imagined possible.

Every child has the capacity to grow when they're met with compassion, consistency, and the right support.
