Case of the week: Conjunctival pyogenic granuloma
A pyogenic granuloma is a benign growth of blood vessels that typically appears as a lobular or fleshy extension of tissue. It is not very common, but we do see it occasionally. Typically, they arise after trauma to the eye, surgery, or at the site of a previous stye or chalazion. Since they are heavily vascularized, bleeding is common.
Symptoms: foreign body sensation
Treatment: First line of treatment is topical beta blocker drops like timolol or corticosteroid drops. Fortunately, many completely regress after a few weeks of treatment. In some cases, simple surgical excision may be required.
