So much of midwifery is knowing when to watch and when to step in.

To listen. To assess. To trust the process.

Sometimes birth unfolds beautifully with very little intervention.

And sometimes a family needs their midwife to step in and help.

Knowing the difference is part of the art of midwifery.

Early this morning, I walked outside and looked up at Orion.

A brand-new life. And the sky as a beautiful reminder of what a privilege it is to hold that space 🤍

Nobody talks about the drive home.

The baby is safe.

Mom is safe.

The decisions were right.

Everyone is where they need to be.

And then you get in your car.

The adrenaline starts to wear off.

The responsibility you’ve been carrying all night finally has somewhere to go.

You sit in your driveway for a bit longer than usual before you walk into your house.

And suddenly your body realizes it’s over.

People see the birth.

Nobody talks about the drive home.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that home birth means ignoring risk or avoiding responsible care.

Actually, the opposite is true.

Safe midwifery care requires ongoing assessment, honest education, preparation, and clear decision-making.

Part of serving families well means recognizing when birth is unfolding normally and when more medical care is needed that cannot be provided at home.

Home birth isn’t about avoiding responsibility. It’s about intentional, informed care.

A little behind the scenes of the last 2 months.

While I’ve been off-call for the last 2 months, I’ve been busy refreshing my skills with breech births and getting re-certified in neonatal resuscitation and CPR.

I’m always learning and refreshing on these vitals skills so I can be the best midwife for my community.

Now I’m gearing up for a busy summer with lots of babies 🫶🏻
