Hearing that your child needs help can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be. Words like “delay, evaluation or speech therapy” can feel heavy. But the answer isn’t to wait. Sometimes the answer is to give your child the support they need right now.

Speech therapy is—helping them find their voice, helping them tell you what they need, helping decrease their frustration, helping them connect with others, feel heard and understood.

So if that little voice in the back of your head keeps saying, “I wonder if we should get some help”— listen to it. We are here to help!

‼️⚠️PLEASE PARDON THE MESS⚠️‼️

The city is in the process of repairing a water main that happens to fall right in front of the clinic 🙃 At this time, the issue does NOT affect our ability to function on normal business hours or our access to water (let’s hope it stays that way). There are two large holes at the front of parking lot so please beware!!

Feel free to park on the side of the building or to use our grass lot to the right of the clinic for parking!! Thank you for understanding!

Does your child have an IEP for speech, but you still feel like they could benefit from additional therapy?

School-based and private therapy don’t have to be an “either-or.” In fact, the two can work together to provide your child with additional support.

We currently have a few morning, early afternoon,
and after-school openings available—and for appointments that fall during the school day, we can provide a school excuse! ✏️

We know how important your child’s education is. We also know that making sure they receive the services they need—whether that’s speech therapy, occupational therapy, special education services or a combination of services—is an important part of helping the whole child succeed.

If you feel like your child could benefit from additional speech therapy outside of school, we’d love to talk with you about how we can help. Send us a message or give us a call to learn more about our current openings!

The kiddos are headed back into the classroom and strong speech and language skills play a part in their academic success! 📚✏️

When a child struggles to communicate, it can affect their academic performance, confidence, friendships, behavior and classroom participation. Speech therapy can help give your child the tools they need to communicate successfully throughout their school day.

At Little Ones, our goal is to help children build communication skills that carry over into all environments—from the therapy room to the classroom, playground, home and everywhere in between.

Have concerns about your child’s speech or language skills as they head back to school? Give us a call or send us a message today!

Let’s talk about the language hierarchy! 💬

One of the most common calls we receive is after a child’s 2-year well visit because they’re “not saying enough words.”

While developmental milestones do matter, as SLPs, we’re just as concerned about the skills that come before spoken language. These early communication skills are the foundation that language is built on. If your child doesn’t have those skills, we don’t want to wait until age 2 to intervene.

So what are those prerequisite language skills?
-eye contact and looking towards a parent or caregiver
-smiling and showing enjoyment or other emotions with others
-using gestures and body language (waving, pointing or reaching)
-cooing, babbling and making sounds to express pleasure or displeasure
-orienting to sounds and responding to spoken language
-play skills like exploring toys, playing with others, using toys together, using one object to represent another (symbolic play), engaging in pretend play
-listening, following directions and identifying familiar people or everyday objects

Notice something? None of these skills listed above involve saying words.

These early communication skills are the foundation for meaningful spoken language. When they’re missing or delayed, it’s often a sign that a child could benefit from an evaluation and early intervention.

As I’ve said before, we don’t recommend a “wait and see” approach. If you’re noticing your child isn’t developing these early language skills, trust your instincts. Early intervention can make a tremendous difference and the earlier we begin, the more opportunities we have to support your child’s speech and language development.
