In honor of Occupational Therapy Month, we’re excited to celebrate another amazing member of our team—Miss Brooke! 💙
✨ Why she became an OT:
"I grew up with a boy who had Down syndrome, and I became very interested in how he learned and experienced the world. In school, I often found myself more focused on observing him and his interactions with his educational team than on what I was supposed to be learning about. This early curiosity sparked a desire in me to help children learn, grow, and reach their full potential. My mom later helped me discover occupational therapy as a career path. In high school, I was fortunate to have opportunities to job shadow local OTs and complete an internship in the field during my senior year, which confirmed my passion for pursuing this profession."
💛 What she loves most:
"I love being able to use my creativity in meaningful and functional ways. The simplest item or task can be adapted and graded into something therapeutic. I enjoy thinking outside the box to meet a child exactly where they are and find ways to make learning both accessible and engaging for them. "
🌎 What she wishes more people knew:
"On the outside, it may look like we're just playing. In OT, play based tasks help to support further development in areas such as fine motor skills, sensory processing, emotional regulation, attention, and social participation. Through play, children are more engaged, motivated, and willing to take on challenges, which allows meaningful progress to happen in a natural and supportive way."
🎉 Favorite milestones to celebrate:
"All milestones are worth celebrating both big and small. An important milestone that sometimes may not be as visible is developing trust with patients and their families. This is a milestone I will always celebrate. Caregivers are reaching out for help, they are opening up about their child's struggles. Building this trust, where caregivers feel heard, supported, and confident in the therapeutic process, and where a child feels safe and comfortable engaging with me is a meaningful milestone in itself. It lays the foundation for collaboration and is essential for meaningful progress in therapy."
🌿 Outside the clinic:
"I enjoy going for walks with my dog, Daisy, thrifting, seaglass hunting, hiking back home in Acadia, being with family and working in my gardens."
Thank you, Miss Brooke, for your heart, creativity, and dedication to the families you support. We are so grateful to have you on our team! 💙
