You're in the stands cheering for your little one, performing their heart out and then an injury. Time slows for you. Are they ok? You immediately want to be near them and doing whatever is possible to make them feel better and ensure they're ok.

From that moment to the seconds that athlete comes off the field/court/stage/rink/track/mat . . We are here. Certified Athletic Trainers are just as worried but we have front row seats and provide immediate care. So in the time it took you to maneuver out of his stands.We're already framing a clinical diagnosis. Ruling out factors that do not apply, ruling in factors that could possibly make it worse. Thinking three steps ahead for how we will treat this injury. If we need to recommend transport, is an immediate transport needed (ems) or can the parents take them? But we're treating more than the injury, we are treating the person. Consoleing the athlete during the process. Making sure that we educate them so that they are fully aware of best and worst case scenarios, So that they are not afraid of what comes next. In those seconds, we are building trust and providing care.
So what happens when there's not a certified athletic trainer with your team? Unfortunately, we rely on coaches and parents to have medical knowledge. To make the hard decisions that certified athletic trainers are trained in making. When seconds count, do you want to hope someone knows what to do?
