💙💛 Celebrating 65 Years | 1961–2026 💛💙

A LASTING LEGACY: HONORING DR. NED T. RUPP

Some physicians leave a lasting impression not only on the patients they care for, but also on the history of the practice they help build.

As National Allergy & ENT continues celebrating 65 years of caring for the Lowcountry, we are taking time to recognize the people whose dedication, expertise, and compassion have helped shape our story.

This week, we are proud to recognize Dr. Ned T. Rupp, who devoted 26 years to our practice from 1997 until his retirement in 2023.

Dr. Rupp joined our team in 1997, bringing an exceptional background in pediatrics, allergy, asthma, and immunology. Before coming to Charleston, he served as an Assistant Professor and later an Associate Professor at the Medical College of Georgia, where he was actively involved in medical education and clinical research.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Rupp received numerous professional honors, including recognition among Best Doctors in America for 15 years. He was also extensively involved in clinical research, helping advance the understanding and treatment of allergies and asthma.

But beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Rupp's greatest contribution to our practice was the care and dedication he brought to his patients.

For more than two decades, he helped individuals and families throughout the Lowcountry navigate allergies, asthma, and other immune-related conditions. His commitment to patient care, medical education, and research became an important part of the foundation upon which our practice continues to grow.

When Dr. Rupp retired in 2023, he closed a remarkable chapter in our history, leaving behind a legacy of service and contributions to the field of allergy and immunology.

As we celebrate 65 years, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Rupp for the many years he devoted to our patients, our practice, and our community.

🎉 Celebrating 65 Years: A Look Back at Our Growth in the 1990s! 🎉

From humble beginnings to a growing team of specialists, the 1990s marked an exciting chapter in our history!

As we continue celebrating 65 years of caring for the Lowcountry, this week's Then & Now takes us back to a decade of growth, new faces, and expanding opportunities to serve our community.

Founded in 1961 by Dr. Charles H. Banov, our practice continued to grow throughout the 1990s, welcoming physicians who brought additional expertise and a shared commitment to exceptional patient care.

🩺 1992 – Dr. Albert F. Finn, Jr. joined the practice, bringing extensive experience in allergy and immunology, along with a passion for serving patients in the Lowcountry.

🩺 1996 – Dr. Arden L. Levy joined our team, expanding our expertise in pediatric and adult allergy, asthma, and immunology.

🩺 1997 – Dr. Allen P. Kaplan became associated with the practice, bringing nationally recognized expertise in allergy, asthma, clinical immunology, and research.

During this exciting period, our practice expanded its reach across the Charleston area, serving patients through our Downtown Charleston, Trident, and East Cooper locations.

Then: A growing practice welcoming new physicians and expanding specialty care throughout the Lowcountry.

What was allergy and asthma care like in Charleston nearly 40 years ago? Our archives give us a fascinating look.
As we continue celebrating 65 years of National Allergy, Asthma & Urticaria Centers of Charleston, this week we’re opening more pages from our archives and sharing a glimpse of the people, patient education, research, and day-to-day work that shaped our practice during the 1980s.
Our original Allergy Update newsletters did much more than announce office news. They were a way to educate patients and families about asthma, allergies, insect and fire-ant stings, pollen seasons, allergy extract preparation, emerging research, environmental triggers, and other health concerns.
They also offer a wonderful snapshot of the practice itself. Staff photographs and behind-the-scenes images show the nurses, laboratory personnel, receptionists, administrators, researchers, and other team members whose work helped care for Lowcountry families.
Some of the material is remarkably familiar today, while other parts show just how much allergy and asthma medicine has changed over the decades. And then there are discoveries we never expected to find - including “Captain America Meets the Asthma Monster!”, a creative approach to asthma education from another era.
That is one of the reasons preserving these materials is so important. They don't just document the history of a medical practice- they tell the story of the people, ideas, and commitment to patient care that carried it from one generation to the next.

Every practice has a beginning. Ours began in Charleston in 1961 with Dr. Charles H. Banov.

What started as Dr. Banov’s allergy practice would grow over the decades into what is now National Allergy & ENT. But as these photographs and documents from our archives show, his vision extended far beyond simply treating patients in an office.

Dr. Banov believed strongly in patient education. Long before websites, patient portals, and social media, his practice published the Allergy Update, a newsletter designed to help patients better understand allergies, asthma, treatments, and the work taking place inside the practice.

The newsletters also provide a wonderful snapshot of the practice itself. A 1985 issue lists the office at 172 Ashley Avenue in Charleston and introduces members of the staff working alongside Dr. Banov at the time.

His influence in allergy medicine also reached well beyond Charleston. During his career, Dr. Banov served as president of the American College of Allergists, traveled internationally to lecture and teach, and was invited to the White House during the Reagan administration as a representative of the field of allergy medicine.

Years later, a 1996 clipping from The Post and Courier announced another honor: Dr. Banov had been elected president of Interasma, the international asthma medical society.

Dr. Banov eventually put many of his experiences into words in his book, Office Upstairs: A Doctor’s Journey. Some of the photographs we're sharing today capture a later chapter in that story - Dr. Banov at a book signing surrounded by former colleagues, staff, friends, and supporters.

These aren't just old photographs.

They are pieces of the story that began 65 years ago - a story built around patient care, education, research, teaching, and a commitment to advancing the field of allergy medicine.

As we celebrate our 65th anniversary, we're proud to preserve that history and share some of it with you.

🎉 CELEBRATING 65 YEARS OF CARE 🎉

This year marks a very special milestone for National Allergy & ENT - 65 years of caring for patients and families in the Lowcountry and beyond.

Our story began in 1961, when Dr. Charles H. Banov opened his allergy practice in Charleston. What started as a solo practice would grow over the decades into a center known for patient care, education, clinical research, and expertise in allergy, asthma, urticaria, and related conditions.

As the practice grew, so did its reach and specialties. At one point, the name National Allergy, Asthma & Urticaria Centers of Charleston reflected the practice’s growing national reputation, particularly in the treatment and research of chronic urticaria and angioedema.

Today, 65 years after Dr. Banov first opened his doors, that legacy continues as National Allergy & ENT.

❤️ Over the coming weeks, we’ll be celebrating our anniversary by looking back at the people, milestones, photographs, research, and stories that helped shape our practice.
