I’m going to give you a tip on the best way to release, or as clients say, “loosen up,” the trapezius muscle, more commonly known as traps.
First, I assess the trap. I palpate to feel the level of tightness. Then I use the sheet as a tool. This helps with grip and takes pressure off my hands. I grab the trap and pull it at a certain tension point away from the body. It will slowly re-educate back long, essentially stretching the fascia. At some point I will push the client’s shoulder closer to her ear. This will shorten the muscle, making it more comfortable for the client and gives slack for the therapist to grab the tissue. I grab the trap and pull up with my front fingers and press down with my thumb in a direction that will unroll the upper trap. I will hold it still while it loosens. As it loosens it will slowly slip out of my hand.
Unrolling a trap is the best way to loosen it. The reason why I do this second is because even though it works great, it’s very aggressive. So it’s more comfortable for the client to slowly work up to it.
Then finally, I will reassess and ask my client how she is feeling.
