School is in full swing! ๐โ๏ธ And the leaves are beginning to change, which means: Fall is coming! ๐
With everyone now officially back to school, it also means that the first wave of Cold & Flu cases will begin to spike. ๐คง Now would be a good time to have your โFlu Kitsโ stocked and ready to go!
We always recommend the standard Vitamin C and Zinc as good choices, but we also encourage everyone to have these extra herbs as great additions to any Flu Kit:
๐๐ฅ๐๐๐ซ๐๐๐ซ๐ซ๐ฒ:
One of its chemical compounds (called sambucus nigra agglutinin) was shown in a study to be able to prevent the influenza virus from entering host cells by grabbing the virus and preventing its ability to replicate. This chemical compound has also been shown to help encourage the immune system to respond in the event of virus exposure by signaling Interleukins 6 and 8, which are important in targeting and fighting off infections and inflammation.
๐๐๐ ๐:
This herb has a tremendous effect on the bodyโs cellular inflammation and degeneration! Its antioxidant properties (such as carnosol and rosmarinic acid) encourage the body to produce its own antioxidants, like glutathione (which is needed to help the body clear itself of toxins like molds and industrial pollutants) and super oxide dismutase (which protects the cells from harmful free radicals). Extracts of sage in clinical studies showed it had effects on the release of nitric oxide from macrophages (important immune fighting cells), therefore increasing its cytotoxic effect against unwanted pathogens, from viruses to various forms of cancer cells!
๐๐จ๐ฌ๐ ๐๐ข๐ฉ๐ฌ:
Its high vitamin c content, along with its flavonoids (such as rutin, quercetin, and eriodictyol) and antioxidants (such as ellagic acid and kaempferol), help aid in the fight against viruses and reduce overall inflammation in the body. This makes rose hips a valuable addition to any at-home medicinal cupboard!
So head out to get your elderberry syrup, get some sage oil and rose hips for at-home teas, and keep your immune systems healthy while the new season changes! ๐ต๐ฉโ๐ซ๐
If you wanted, we also have some of our Elderberry Elixir and our Viral Defender (which contains a blend of immune supporting herbs and essential oils, like rose hips and sage), available on the shelf for anyone wanting tinctures to have on hand for yourself or the family! ๐
(We also have a Sagely Delight tea, but it is currently out of stock due to high demand. We'll hopefully have more on the shelf in the next week or two!)

Did you know this about Elderberry?
Since ancient Egypt, there is evidence of the use of black elder for the treatment of many diseases in various medicinal formulas, as well as used in food. Even famous physicians Hippocrates and Pedanius Dioscoridis (the father of pharmacognosy) used medicines prepared from elder flower and berries.
Did you know this about Sage?
While we all know sage to be used by many religions and folklores to ward off evil spirits, sageโs latin name - Salvia - comes from the word โsalvereโ meaning โto healโ. It also is a part of the mint family, and a teaspoon of dried sage pairs well in flavor with peppermint or spearmint when consumed as a tea.
Did you know this about Rose Hips?
European sailors in the 18th century used to pack their boats for long voyages with dried preparations of rose hips and burdock root to prevent scurvy (a disease caused by vitamin c deficiency). Just 1 gram (roughly 1 teaspoon) of loose rose hips contains about 420 mg of Vitamin Cโฆ thatโs more than 1 medium sized orange, which only contains about 70mg!!
