Access to mental health care for service members is about to get a whole lot harder.
TRICARE is changing requirements for counselors in Maryland, and it could significantly reduce access to care for service members and their families.
Here’s the issue:
Fully licensed counselors may now be required to practice under a physician (MD/DO) based on which exam they took, even if they are already approved for independent practice under state law.
What this means:
• Fewer available providers
• Disrupted continuity of care
• More barriers in an already strained system
At a time when mental health support is critical, access should be expanding, not shrinking.
If you’re in this field or if you care about access to mental health care for those who serve, this is worth paying attention to. I encourage you to use the link below to send a message to your representatives. It’s prewritten and takes less than a minute to submit.

TRICARE decision could impact enrollees’ access to mental health services and disrupt counselors’ practices.
