Newborn exam, done right in the comfort of your home🥹❤️

I remember being in my assist phase as a student, learning how to do the newborn exam. I was so nervous like how am I going to remember all these things😩 and now, it’s like second nature to me!

Some of the things we’re checking during the newborn exam are reflexes, heart and lung sounds, baby’s hips, spine, clavicles, femoral pulses, palate, abdomen, skin, tone, overall movement, and so much more. It’s crazy to think how overwhelming it felt back then, and now I can do a full newborn exam right at the foot of your bed. 🥰❤️

Postpartum visits are so special to me. I always appreciate when clients ask me to hold their babies!

Some people may think as midwives we spend a lot of time holding babies, but we really don’t! 😩 In fact, it’s probably one of the least things we do. Most of our postpartum care is spent making sure both mama and baby are doing well, answering questions, checking on healing, and encouraging lots of skin-to-skin and bonding during those precious first few weeks.

So when a mama hands me her baby and says, “Can you hold him?” it always makes my heart so happy. 🥹

Fun fact: this sweet boy and I actually share the same name! His is spelled Micah and mine is Mikah. 🤍🥰

I officially graduated midwifery school over the weekend!

Honestly this still doesn’t even feel real lol. These last few years have stretched me in literally every way possible. Mentally, emotionally, spiritually, financially…there were sooo many moments I felt overwhelmed, exhausted, discouraged, unsure of myself, running on no sleep, trying to balance school, births, clinic, postpartum visits, work, life, relationships, finances… all while being on call constantly.

A lot of people see the graduation pictures but don’t fully see everything that goes into making it to this point. Midwifery school consumes your life. Missing sleep because you got called to a birth at 2am, leaving in the middle of things because someone’s in labor, unpaid clinical time, trying to survive financially while still showing up fully for women and babies… it’s a LOT.

I also know I haven’t posted/documented my journey online as much as I probably could have. Honestly most of the time I was just trying to survive school, make it to births, complete clinical requirements, and make it through each season 😬

There were genuinely times I questioned if I was even gonna make it through this journey, but TMH has carried me through every single season of it and I’m sooo grateful to officially say I graduated today 🥹

Now I’m preparing for my NARM exam + licensing process as I take the final steps toward becoming a CPM. I’m also still working on getting the rest of my birth supplies/equipment together as I transition from student midwife into practice.

I made a GoFundMe + wishlist for anyone who feels led to support me during this next season. Whether you donate, share, pray for me, encourage me, or have supported me in ANY way throughout this journey, thank you seriously 🫶🏽 it means more than you know!!

This past weekend I attended the Conference and I’m still in awe of what I experienced.

This was my first time attending since I only joined NBMA not too long ago, and I traveled to the conference by myself. I had quite a few moments where I had to push myself to step out of my comfort zone (because I’m actually very shy lol) and introduce myself to people. But I’m so glad I did.

Being surrounded by so many different Black midwives was something I can’t fully put into words. It was powerful to be in a space filled with women continuing a legacy that has existed in our communities for generations.

I left feeling so full of love, encouragement, and even more sure that midwifery is what I was called to do.

Special thank you to .midwifery for inviting me out to celebrate her birthday while we were there. That moment helped me meet so many amazing midwives and definitely helped me break out of my shell!

I’m grateful for the knowledge that was shared throughout the conference, but most of all the community. Truly thankful for this experience 🤎

Down to my last 2 births before finishing my numbers for school and NARM!

I just left a surprise breech birth and it went so beautifully. Sweet baby girl came feet first with no complications at all. One of those births that reminds you how powerful, calm, and trusting birth can be. It feels surreal being this close to the end of my student journey while also knowing I still have so much to learn and grow into!

This year really did a number on me (in the best and worst way).
So many lessons, firsts, long nights, and moments I’ll never forget.
Grateful for the families who trusted me and the midwives who taught me along the way.

Metro Detroit, get ready for your next upcoming Black Midwife 🥰🤍

One of my favorite bitter sweet moments of midwifery - 6 week visits!

This is the visit where we close the care chapter, but the bond we’ve built doesn’t just end here. Grateful to witness this beautiful mama’s journey with her newest little one!

This mama did her thing.

She trusted her body every step of the way….cracking jokes between waves, shifting positions, and moving with such instinct and power. She leaned all the way in and followed her rhythm, her breath, her baby. I witnessed them work together in such a raw, beautiful, and intentional way. She completely rocked this birth and I am so grateful to have been her midwife ! 🥹🫶🏾❤️
