Today is World Su***de Prevention Day, and this day always gives me a reason to reflect.
After many years of working in mental health, one thing I know for sure is that we never really know what someone else is carrying. People can smile, go to work, take care of their families, show up for everyone around them, and still be struggling in ways no one can see.
Sometimes people don’t need us to have the perfect words or all the answers. They just need someone willing to listen, someone who checks in, or someone who reminds them that they matter and they’re not alone.
My heart goes out today to anyone who has struggled with thoughts of su***de, the families who have walked alongside someone they love, and especially those who have experienced the loss of someone to su***de.
This work has always been much bigger than a profession for us. At C.T. Watts & Associates, we have the privilege of sitting with people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. We never take that responsibility lightly.
Check on your people. Give someone a call. Listen a little longer. Be kind even when you don’t know the whole story. You never know what your presence might mean to someone on a difficult day.
There is always hope, even when it may be difficult to see it.
If you or someone you love is struggling, call or text 988 for support.
Respectfully,
Dr. Christopher T. Watts, Sr., Ph.D.
