Recently, our team at Centre County Correctional Facility (CCCF) in Pennsylvania received an unexpected thank-you letter from an incarcerated individual reflecting on her time there and the positive impact it had on her life.

She states, “Your hard work, and caring about your jobs and consistency, along with your crazy humor and discipline brought me the peace I needed so badly. I was able to see that my life and my family mean so much more to me than allowing drugs to be an excuse for losing one more second of my time away from them. I am so grateful for the stay at the facility and the respect between officers, LTs, nursing staff, and inmates.”

“So, thank you in your role in helping me rethink or to change the direction in which my mind thinks because your facility, in a whole, has definitely helped me to be a better me. My family will thank you too. My goal is to never let them go ever again!”

While her personal growth is the heart of this story, it also highlights the dedication of the professionals who serve at CCCF every day and create an environment where positive change is possible. We are proud of our CCCF team, and their work reminds us that correctional facilities can play an important role in supporting rehabilitation, personal growth, and successful reentry into the community. Thank you for making a difference!

The day began with a driving rain followed by high winds, but no one regrets the rides they do. Especially when it is for a great cause. Giving is our way of investing in the future, fostering hope, and supporting those who need it most. Our success is intertwined with the well-being of those people in the communities we serve and support action that affects positive change. The Tour de Cure combines our passion for cycling with the goal to raise critical funds to research diabetes and ultimately try and put an end to this chronic disease. At PrimeCare Medical, Inc., great patient care happens when teams communicate, trust their clinical judgment, and act without hesitation. We want to recognize the outstanding collaboration between our mental health team and nursing staff at the Franklin County Jail. Through teamwork, communication, and decisive action, a patient was transported to the ER after staff recognized that something more serious could be happening. That decision mattered. The patient was later diagnosed with significant medical complications that required urgent treatment.

This is what correctional health care looks like at its best: listening, collaborating, advocating, and never dismissing concerns. Outstanding work by the entire team!

Memorial Day is a time to remember those who gave their lives for others, protecting freedoms they would never again enjoy themselves. Every flag placed beside a gravesite represents a life cut short, a family forever changed, and sacrifices that continue to be carried by loved ones for generations. Today, we honor those who paid with their lives to serve people they would never meet. Their courage, duty, and sacrifice deserve more than a moment of recognition — they deserve remembrance.

Some moments remind us that compassion, awareness, and quick action can make a difference. We want to recognize Courtney Gist, CMA at St. Mary’s, for her actions this week. Although it was her scheduled day off, Courtney volunteered to come in and help cover a last-minute staffing need. As she was leaving the facility later that afternoon, she noticed a young man lying face down on the pavement in extreme heat.

When Courtney stopped to check on him, he shared that he was struggling with suicidal thoughts and wanted to die. Courtney immediately sprang into action — staying calm, offering reassurance, and safely escorting him to the detention center entrance while keeping him engaged in conversation. She remained by his side as staff, mental health professionals, and state troopers responded, continuing to comfort and encourage him during a very difficult moment.

“Because of Courtney, a life was potentially saved and, most importantly, a young man is now receiving the help he so desperately needs,” said HSA Ashley Betts. “She is exceptional and has been nothing short of an amazing addition to the St. Mary’s team.”

Courtney’s compassion and humanity embody what we strive to deliver every day, and we are proud to have her as part of the PrimeCare Medical family.

Nice work Sharon Jones! Sharon is a scheduler at Baltimore County Detention Center, and she provides an essential service navigating an often-cumbersome process of securing appointments for our incarcerated patients with community specialists. There is a myriad of components that need to be coordinated (i.e. security, court hearings, outside provider schedules, staffing ratios, etc.) for patients to attend these needed appointments, and Sharon delivers every time! She recently helped a patient get scheduled for care related to a brain injury and was singled out for her exceptional work by a case manager at the Rehabilitation Institute at Sinai Hospital.

Recognizing exceptional teamwork and rapid clinical response in action at Jennifer Road Detention Center! During a routine patient evaluation, Dr. Rottmann identified an acute change in mental status and immediately alerted nursing staff and security, recognizing the signs of a potential neurological emergency. Moments later, the patient began seizing. What happened next was a model of coordinated, high acuity care: Dr. Rottmann, Angel Gross, and Kierston Fletcher worked seamlessly together to stabilize the patient and provide immediate clinical intervention while Security staff ensured a safe environment and coordinated rapid transport without delay. The entire team demonstrated strong clinical judgment, quick escalation, situational awareness, and calm under pressure. Thank you Dr. Rottmann for providing timely education to medical staff and security following the event, reinforcing key clinical symptom presentation and strengthening team readiness for future emergencies. This incident is a powerful reminder of the impact of early recognition, timely escalation, and interdisciplinary teamwork in optimizing patient outcomes!
