As we look ahead to Homeland’s 160th anniversary in 2027, we’re celebrating the remarkable women who started it all.

This September, The Past Shall Rise brought their stories to life through performances at Harrisburg Cemetery and Homeland Center. Audiences met the women whose determination and compassion helped establish the Home for the Friendless in 1867—a legacy carried forward by today’s Board of Managers.

An open door, a friendly greeting and a little laughter—Homeland Center resident Brenda Fazzolari enjoys staying connected with the people around her.

A lifelong Harrisburg resident, Brenda has stories to share, from visits to Pomeroy’s Tea Room to meeting her husband at a church festival. Today, family visits, her faith and warm relationships with Homeland staff brighten her days as she receives skilled care and therapy.

“Everybody’s very friendly here,” Brenda says.

The decades may change, but the heart of Homeland remains the same: our caring staff.

During September’s National Assisted Living Week celebration, “Shining Through the Years,” we recognized the people who make our residents feel at home every day. Residents and families shared heartfelt “shout-outs,” while trustees and Board of Managers members wrote personalized thank-you notes. Nancy Hull, chair of the Board of Managers, also joined in recognizing our team.

From joining residents for tie-dye crafts and disco fitness to offering kindness and reassurance, our staff make a difference in ways both big and small. Thank you for the care, joy and dedication you bring to Homeland!

For Andrea Fisher, helping residents stay active starts with building relationships—and sometimes a friendly game of balloon volleyball!

Since joining Homeland Center as director of therapy in spring 2025, Andrea has brought a personal approach to helping residents move safely and confidently. Her twice-weekly exercise classes combine movement with fun while helping personal care residents feel comfortable turning to her team for support.

Working alongside nursing and activities staff, Andrea embraces the teamwork that drew her to Homeland. “I love this team,” she says. “It’s like a family here.”

Nearly 160 years ago, a gathering at Market Square Presbyterian Church helped set Homeland’s story in motion.

On September 27, we presented the church with a plaque recognizing its role as one of the nine Harrisburg churches whose women came together to care for widows and children following the Civil War. The Home for the Friendless was organized in Market Square’s lecture room in November 1866. Church member Eliza Ewing Haldeman helped bring that vision to life by hosting planning meetings and donating land for the home.

As we look ahead to Homeland’s 160th anniversary in 2027, we’re grateful to honor Market Square’s place in our history and the women whose compassion continues to inspire our work today.
