New research uncovers more about why APOE4 damages brain health. APOE4 triggers vessel-supporting pericytes to transform into scar-forming myofibroblasts and simultaneously cripples the brain's cellular waste-clearance system by causing cholesterol to accumulate in astrocytes. This fits very well as part of the overall “connection vs. protection” mode switch that we identified as underlying Alzheimer’s, with many different signaling pathways impacted by ApoE4.

Fortunately, the vascular damage and waste-clearance breakdown are biologically reversible - which is why APOE4 individuals (as well as APOE4-negative) benefit from ReCODE, which helps repair blood-brain barrier permeability, optimizes lipid transport, and enhances glymphatic clearance.
