Postpartum home visit + a footprint 💛

Within 72 hours after a Brookhaven mom gives birth, we head over to her home to check on her. While mom and baby are comfortable, cozy and bonding, we talk about feeding progress, weigh the baby, discuss any concerns, and conduct newborn screenings.

We also take a moment to make a footprint keepsake with baby's date, time and place of birth. Baby will never be this tiny again (and mom will likely never again be so tired!), so we take a moment to capture the sweet memories for her.

Now offering monthly appointments in Monterey!

In order to better serve families located within or near the Highland, Bath and Alleghany counties, we've been offering prenatal & postpartum clinical days once a month in Monterey, VA. Families seeking pregnancy care in the highlands of Virginia and West Virginia can now have easier access – we come to you for appointments!

This is a wonderful, rural area where moms have to drive many miles over the mountains just for their prenatal checkups. Please also spread the word if you know of someone who could benefit from this service!

PSA for Birth Center Week 2026!📢📢

Birth centers are so much more than places to give birth. We're here to help families be seen, heard, find community, learn, and have a space to peacefully labor and birth.

In an era of:

- unreasonably high rates of maternal death in the U.S.
- lack of community for mothers and families
- postpartum depression
- poor understanding of the nutrition needed to sustain pregnancy & postpartum
- insurance companies dictating "health"

And amidst so many more challenges, families are turning to birth centers because they know it's not meant to be this way! Modern midwives are bringing us back to the traditions that sustained families for centuries, while pulling in the many life-saving benefits of modern medicine.

Happy LABOR Day! May all births be more like this one...kind of like a Labor Day celebration, complete with bbq, a b**r for dad, and some cake.

We looovee to see this when we show up to a birth.

"Relax. (Breathe).
Release. (Exhale).
OPEN."

We knew this mom had prepared herself to do exactly what she's supposed to be doing in labor...breathe and let her body take over.

Social media has made birth more visible than ever, and can give the perception that labor is all about curb walking, birth hammocks, squatting, you name it. Those tools are wonderful when needed (and when timed appropriately) to help labor progress. BUT, a birth typically goes best when a mother rests, breathes and lets her body open until contractions are to the point that she's drawn to actively engage in the birth process.

For labor prep, we recommend the wonderful Bright Beginnings Labor Workshop series hosted at our center by Elizabeth Schwartz, dates and details on our events calendar brookhavenbirth.com/events . We also love resources like Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way and other books on our bookshelf which are free for our moms to check out 💕

You might see a new face around Brookhaven this week. We're so blessed to have Sarah Simmons bringing her breadth of midwifery experience to our team!

Sarah has worked in a range of midwifery settings, from higher-risk OB care to home practice. She is a graduate of the Midwives College of Utah and served for 15 years as a midwife in Washington state. She has worked in higher-risk OB care, as well as home and birth center midwifery settings. She's an advocate for safety in out-of-hospital birth, and served for five years on the board of Washington Alliance for Responsible Midwifery (WARM).

Midwife Sarah’s care is described as nurturing and grounding. When not caring for mamas & babies, you can find her reading, canning, gardening, sewing, enjoying the great outdoors, and loving on her grandbabies.

Please welcome midwife Sarah, and get to know her if you come in for appts!💛
