Not Just a Bump on a Log
Yesterday I was walking through the woods with my husband.
The birds around us were making quite a fuss.
My husband was watching and noticing.
I was busy in my head contemplating the latest book I was reading.
And then my husband pointed to a tree ahead.
All I saw was a bump on a log.
He pulled out his phone and snapped some pictures.
I was in awe.
That was not just a bump on a log.
It was a magnificent Great Horned Owl.
And something about how I almost walked by this magnificent creature stayed with me. It reminded me how incredible nature is.
And then I remembered that I am nature too.
I am also magnificent and incredible, and I cause awe and wonder simply by being.
So I wanted to remind you of that too, in case you've forgotten.
You are nature.
You are magnificent.
And you don't have to be anything other than what you are.
The owl isn't trying to be a bear or a deer, two of the other animals I saw on my walks this week.
It's not trying to be a hawk.
Or a squirrel.
Or a fox.
It is completely itself.
And that is enough.
What are you trying to be that you are not?
What if the things that light you up, the things that bring you alive, the things that make you uniquely you, are not distractions from your path?
What if they are your path?
Maybe your job isn't to become someone else.
Maybe it's simply to stop walking past the magnificent creature you've been all along.
