🍼 **Newborn Feeding: What's Normal... and When Should You Be Concerned?**

Welcoming a new baby is exciting, but it can also bring lots of questions! At **Tots and Teens Pediatric Clinic**, we're here to help you know what's expected—and when it's time to give us a call.

💚 **Common Feeding Concerns That Are Usually Normal**
• Feeding every 2–3 hours (or 8–12 times in 24 hours)
• Gas and frequent burping
• Fussiness, especially during the evening ("witching hour")
• Small amounts of spit-up after feedings
• Hiccups

💩 **What About Bowel Movements?**
Newborn stools change a lot during the first few weeks!
• **Days 1–2:** Thick, black, sticky stools (meconium)
• **Days 3–5:** Greenish to yellow transitional stools
• **After milk comes in:** Breastfed babies often have loose, mustard-yellow, seedy stools. Formula-fed babies usually have tan, yellow, or brown stools that are more formed.
• It's normal for some babies to p**p after every feeding, while others may go several days between bowel movements, especially if they are breastfed—as long as the stool is soft and your baby is feeding well and gaining weight.

💡 **Tips to Help**
🩷 Burp your baby during and after feedings.
💚 Hold your baby upright for 20–30 minutes after feeding.
🩷 Feed based on your baby's hunger cues.
💚 A good latch or proper bottle-feeding technique can reduce swallowed air and help with gas.

🚨 **Call Your Pediatrician If Your Baby:**
• Refuses several feedings in a row
• Has fewer wet diapers than expected (generally at least 6 wet diapers a day after the first week)
• Has forceful vomiting or green-colored vomit
• Has blood in the stool or vomit
• Has a fever of **100.4°F (38°C) or higher** if younger than 3 months
• Is difficult to wake for feedings or seems unusually sleepy
• Has hard, pellet-like stools, a swollen belly, or seems to be in significant pain with bowel movements
• Has white, gray, or black stools after the first few days of life
• Is not gaining weight or is losing weight after the first several days

Remember, every baby is different. If something doesn't seem right, trust your instincts—we're here to help.
