Fred knew something was wrong. Constantly drained, short of breath, and still not feeling better after his heart valve replacement, he knew something wasn't right.

Then Dr. Phillip Smith at CIS in Baton Rouge and Zachary found the cause: a paravalvular leak. One minimally invasive procedure "flipped a switch," helping Fred avoid another open-heart surgery and get back to feeling like himself.

On this episode of The Cardiovascular Pulse, hear Fred's story and learn from Dr. Smith about paravalvular leaks, warning signs, and why listening to your body could make all the difference.

CIS and Baton Rouge General Medical Center (BRG) have reached an exciting milestone with their 700th WATCHMAN implant procedure! Congratulations to Dr. Robert Drennan, Dr. Ryan Gullatt, and the dedicated teams at BRG and CIS on this incredible achievement!
The Watchman device is a one-time, minimally invasive heart implant for patients with AFib who are dependent on blood thinners. The device reduces stroke risk for a lifetime and can eliminate the need for long term blood thinners.

Check out our latest article in 225 Magazine to learn more about structural heart and valve disease, the symptoms to watch for, our Structural Heart Program, and how early awareness - knowing your risk factors, staying aware of changes in your body, and prioritizing routine screenings and care - can make a life-saving difference.

Line dancing, walking, or keeping up with her regular exercise routine, movement was something Rochelle loved - until pain in her right leg began to slow her down. After attending a health fair where we provided a free screening that identified signs of vein disease, Rochelle saw Dr. Amit Patel at CIS in Baton Rouge, who diagnosed her with Chronic Venous Insufficiency. He treated the root of the problem through a minimally invasive procedure that provided relief from her pain within days, and she’s back to doing what she loves.

Watch Rochelle’s journey and learn more about the warning signs of vein disease.

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a leading risk factor for stroke. Many people assume they would notice if they had high blood pressure, but most of the time, hypertension does not cause symptoms. Because it can quietly damage blood vessels and vital organs, including the brain, kidneys, and eyes, it is often called “the silent killer.” Learn more about hypertension and the steps you can take today to help lower your risk.

Symptoms and signs of hypertension are often difficult to detect early on. Contact Cardiovascular Institute of the South for blood pressure testing.
