Dr. Sohail Hasan Joins Fellow Retina Physicians for Advocacy on Capitol Hill
Illinois Retina Associates physician Sohail J. Hasan, MD, PhD, FACS, FASRS, FRCSC, recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet with members of Congress and congressional staff on issues affecting retina patients, physicians, and the future of vision care.
As part of a September 16 advocacy day organized by Retina Consultants of America (RCA), Dr. Hasan joined fellow retina specialists and RCA leadership for meetings on Capitol Hill focused on protecting patient access to retina care, addressing continued cuts to Medicare reimbursement, and supporting federal investment in vision research.
A primary topic was the impact of declining Medicare reimbursement and rising practice costs on community-based specialty care. Dr. Hasan and fellow physicians emphasized that continued reductions could limit patient access to timely treatment, particularly for those with chronic, sight-threatening retinal diseases.
The group also highlighted the importance of sustaining vision research, including support for the National Eye Institute and ongoing efforts to advance longer-lasting treatments, genetic therapies, and other innovations designed to prevent blindness and reduce treatment burden.
Throughout the day, Dr. Hasan met with lawmakers and congressional staff from both parties, including Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Morgan Griffith, Sean Casten, Lizzie Fletcher, Adam Gray, and Mike Kennedy, along with discussions involving other physician members of Congress and members of the Senate.
“Physicians have a responsibility to advocate not only for our profession, but for our patients,” said Dr. Hasan. “The decisions made in Washington directly affect whether patients can continue to receive timely, high-quality specialty care in their communities.”
